35 years ago today, on 29 August 1991, 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan closed the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site - the world’s largest testing ground. Between 1949 and 1989, 456 nuclear explosions caused lasting harm to the health and lives of thousands.
From a nuclear testing ground to a global leader in disarmament, chose peace over power. In 2009, the UN proclaimed 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests, honouring this historic path toward a safer, weapons-free future. 🌏
