🌱 We've reached an important sustainability milestone by completing a four-year project to reduce the use of pure nitrous oxide across our hospitals.

Nitrous oxide is a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change when released into the atmosphere. Thanks to the hard work of colleagues across the Trust, this project will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by around 1,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) each year, the same as the energy needed to power and heat around 520 homes for a year.

The project was led by Dr Anesh Patel [pictured right], who is an anaesthetic resident at Imperial College Healthcare and a sustainability apprentice at LDN Apprenticeships, alongside the Trust's sustainability team. Pictured left is Dr Gareth Thompson, our sustainability clinical and innovation lead.

Meet Zineb Boualaoui. She initially joined the Trust on a temporary contract as a health care support worker during the pandemic.

She has since become the Trust’s first in-house trainee to successfully complete the Healthcare Scientist Training Programme in Critical Care Science. Zineb did all of this while managing her day job and raising her 10-year-old son.

“It wasn’t easy. I was often completing my own homework while helping my son with his! At work, I had incredible support. I was given the time and encouragement to focus on my studies while developing my workplace experience."

The training has given Zineb a new perspective on her colleagues and on the future. She shared, "I enjoyed completing rotations in other departments. It allowed me to understand how different healthcare science teams and specialties collaborate to support patients."

"I feel very grateful to have had this opportunity within the Trust. I hope to carry the same open and supportive approach that I had as I progress into my new role as a clinical practice educator with the Trust's central healthcare science team supporting all of our trainee scientists."

Applications are now open for the Go Further Healthcare Leaders Fellowship, a programme for experienced clinical colleagues from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.

The fellowship, which combines accredited learning, mentorship and practical experience, was created to help address under-representation in senior leadership roles.

Through west London's Lung Cancer Screening Programme, our health improvement team has supported more than 1,500 people to reduce or quit smoking, with over 300 people quitting completely.

Maleeha and Dolly Grace, two of our health improvement advisors [pictured], are passionate about helping smokers quit.

Commenting on the impact of the programme, Maleeha shared: "I feel even more motivated to keep going and working towards making a real difference."

Dolly Grace added, "Knowing that a conversation can help someone take a positive step towards better health makes this role incredibly meaningful."

By supporting people to stop smoking, the team is not only changing individual lives but also helping to improve the health of our communities and the care we provide across west London.

Trusts join forces for complex cancer surgery 💙

A collaboration between four clinical specialities from three NHS Trusts, including Imperial College Healthcare, has successfully removed a very large (7kg) tumour from a patient’s shoulder blade that threatened to cut off his airway if left untreated.

Well done to everyone involved in this extraordinary achievement 👏🏼
