Her Excellency Ismara Vargas Walter, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the United Kingdom, was honoured to be received by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, at the Palace of Westminster.

During the meeting, the Ambassador delivered a letter from His Excellency Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of People's Power. Written on behalf of the Cuban parliament, the letter conveys institutional regards, addresses relations between the two parliaments, and outlines the grave humanitarian situation currently affecting the Cuban people due to United States extraterritorial sanctions.

Her Excellency briefed the Speaker on the current situation in Cuba and called for continued parliamentary support. The Ambassador expressed deep appreciation for the solidarity shown by more than 117 Members of Parliament who supported Early Day Motion 2739, which raised concern over the humanitarian impact of these sanctions. She further highlighted the valuable work of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cuba (APPG), chaired by Steve Witherden MP, alongside other significant parliamentary initiatives.

The Embassy of Cuba in the United Kingdom extends its sincere gratitude to the Speaker of the House of Commons and his office for the warm reception and their continued commitment to parliamentary dialogue between our two peoples.

Parliament heard powerful testimony on Monday 8 June, as MPs from across the political spectrum highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation in Cuba and called for urgent action to ease the suffering caused by Trump’s siege. The debate was secured by Jeremy Corbyn MP following his recent visit...

The so-called 'crisis' in Cuba is reported on almost daily by major US corporate media outlets, as well as some European and Latin American ones. This biased press no longer denies that the destructive harm is brought about by the US government, yet glosses over this fact as if it were a natural occurrence.

These media outlets do not pass moral judgement on the collective punishment and widespread human suffering, nor on the lack of any legitimate justification for the assault on an entire people. However, they emphasise the major challenges and difficulties faced by Cuban society and its government in confronting the aggression, as if they were responsible for it.

They talk about Cuba's problems when it is well known that the real problem is US aggression against Cuba. Incidentally, this aggression did not begin in January 2026.

End that aggression and there will be no more talk of Cuba's supposed problem.

Thank you for your principled intervention in Parliament, challenging the extraterritorial US warfare on Cuba as a breach of international law. We appreciate your consistent solidarity and your call to defend sovereignty and multilateralism. 🇨🇺🇬🇧
