We’re kicking off August by celebrating Kadayawan, Davao’s grandest festival 🎉

The name comes from dayaw, an old local word meaning good, valuable or beautiful, which sums up the whole mood of it, a city in full celebration of its people, its produce and its heritage. It is one of the biggest gatherings in the Filipino south, pulling in crowds from right across the country.

15 August, the indigenous games
16 August, the grand float parade and street dancing finale

In the mountains of northern Kalinga, a tattoo was something you had to earn ✋

For the Butbut people, the marks were never just for show. Warriors were inked for their bravery, women for beauty and status, and every symbol was drawn from the world around them, so a person's skin told the story of their whole life. The art is called batok, and it is tapped in entirely by hand using a citrus thorn, soot and a wooden stick, a method believed to be over a thousand years old.

It was almost lost, until Apo Whang-Od and her young apprentices kept it going, one careful tap at a time.

Lake Sebu is where you fly over the Seven Falls on the highest zipline in Southeast Asia

The ride sends you soaring high above the treetops, gliding past several waterfalls as they crash down the mountainside below your feet. It sits in the cool, misty highlands of South Cotabato, a long, winding drive up from General Santos, which is exactly why so few travellers ever make it here.

The falls each carry their own T'boli name, and the second and tallest, Hikong Bente, drops more than 70 metres. It is one of those rare places that feels wild, green and completely removed from the beach side Philippines most people picture.

Coffee has always been more than a drink here. It is the reason neighbours linger a little longer, the thing offered the moment you step through someone’s door, poured strong and shared slowly.

This is the Chocolate Hills in Bohol 🍫⛰️

Right now they are a deep green, but for a few months each year the grass on top dries out and the whole landscape turns a rich chocolate brown, which is how they earned the name. There are more than 1,200 of them, spread across the middle of the island in almost identical cone shapes, and no one built a single one.

They are made of ancient limestone, once an old seabed, slowly shaped over millions of years into the rolling field you see today. Locals have their own version, telling of two giants who hurled rocks at each other until the hills were left behind.

The Philippines is one of the most extraordinary textile cultures in the world and it remains one of the best kept secrets in Southeast Asian craft 🇵🇭

What makes Filipino weaving so remarkable is that it was never one tradition, it developed independently across dozens of communities, each shaped by their own geography, beliefs and materials.

Every fibre chosen for a reason and every pattern carrying a meaning that goes far deeper than decoration. These textiles were used to mark ceremony, signal identity and in some communities communicate directly with the spiritual world.

This is Bukidnon in Mindanao and most people have never heard of it 🍍

Tucked away in the highlands of Mindanao, Bukidnon is a vast, cool and surprisingly green plateau sitting over 1,000 metres above sea level a world away from the beaches most people associate with the Philippines. T

he landscape here is dominated by rolling fields of pineapple that stretch as far as the eye can see, producing fruit on a scale that makes it one of the most important agricultural regions in the entire country.

Del Monte has operated here since the 1920s and the plantation alone covers tens of thousands of hectares across the province.
