Maryon Wilson Park is part of what was once the ancient woodland called Hanging Wood. The wood was within the manorial grounds held by the Maryon-Wilson family since 1767. During World War I, Sir Spencer made large sections of the land available for allotments, and in February 1924 donated 32 acres of Hanging Wood to the L.C.C. This section of land was to be enjoyed by the public and later became

known as Maryon Wilson Park. The park was opened in July 1926, and only a few years later a small heard of deer was donated to the park by Sir Spencer Maryon-Wilson. In 1950 a number of wild Exmoor ponies were donated to the park by Miss Etherington. The park is now home to four ponies/horses belonging to Charlton Park Riding for the Disabled, a heard of deer, goats and a variety of bird life including ducks, geese, peacocks and chickens.
