You can still experience it safely, and you can build what you need from things you probably already have at home.

๐ช Aluminium foil
๐ A pin or needle

Together, they make a simple ๐ฃ๐๐ก๐๐ข๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ ๐ฃ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐๐๐ง๐ข๐ฅ.
And the science is wonderfully simple.
โ๏ธ Sunlight enters through one tiny pinhole.
โก๏ธ It travels the length of the box.
โฌ An image of the Sun appears on the white screen ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ง๐๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ the pinhole.
Then, as the Moon moves across the Sun, you can actually watch that projected circle of light become a crescent. ๐
๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ข๐ ๐๐๐ง?
That little crescent isnโt a drawing or a trick. It is an actual projected image of the eclipsed Sun.
Weโve put together a ๐ฆ๐ง๐๐ฃ-๐๐ฌ-๐ฆ๐ง๐๐ฃ ๐๐จ๐๐๐ in the images below. ๐
Itโs a brilliant little project to make with children, take into the garden, bring to an eclipse gathering, or simply try because the physics is rather satisfying.
