No one should be on the streets, especially at Christmas.

๐ŸŒนLabour is working to deliver that. (And the only time we are allowed to mention the C word until after Halloweโ€™en)

For anyone who has seen or smelled the large amount of smoke across the area this evening, there are reports of a

A significant plume of dark smoke can be seen across parts of south-east London, with footage showing a substantial fire close to the railway line causing substantial delays.

Details are still emerging and, at the time of writing, the London Fire Brigade has not yet confirmed the full circumstances.

Iโ€™ll update this post if there is any important information from the emergency services.

You can still experience it safely, and you can build what you need from things you probably already have at home.

Together, they make a simple

And the science is wonderfully simple.

โ˜€๏ธ Sunlight enters through one tiny pinhole.

Then, as the Moon moves across the Sun, you can actually watch that projected circle of light become a crescent. ๐ŸŒ’

๐—ง๐—›๐—˜ ๐—–๐—ข๐—ข๐—Ÿ ๐—•๐—œ๐—ง?

That little crescent isnโ€™t a drawing or a trick. It is an actual projected image of the eclipsed Sun.

Itโ€™s a brilliant little project to make with children, take into the garden, bring to an eclipse gathering, or simply try because the physics is rather satisfying.

The Castle Cinema team has begun recruiting a General Manager for Castle Catford, an important step in building the team that will bring the venue to life. The wider organisation is also recruiting a Facilities and Technical Coordinator for its head office.

Alongside the cinema screens, the operator is exploring affordable, self-contained creative studios within the building. Expressions of interest are open so that local makers, artists, bakers, workshop leaders and independent businesses can help shape the plans.

The exact layout has not yet been decided, but the ambition is to create glass-fronted spaces along the entrance corridor, making local creativity and enterprise part of the experience of the venue.

A separate interest form for local and independent suppliers interested in selling products through the cinema bar is also due to launch in the coming weeks.

These are practical signs that the wider vision for Castle Catford is developing as a home for film, culture, creativity and local enterprise at the heart of Catford.

The operator is now working towards opening in ๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐˜๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ป ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฒ, rather than this summer, because some of the work needed to bring the building back into use is taking longer than expected.

The timetable has changed, but the project remains active. Recruitment is under way, the creative offer is being shaped and further opportunities for local businesses are being prepared.

When Catford Mews closed, the priority was to make sure Catford did not lose its cinema for good. I worked with partners to help secure The Castle Cinema as the new operator. What matters now is keeping the project moving towards reopening, with the right support, transparency and momentum.

Lewishamโ€™s new administration must work constructively with the operator, support delivery and keep residents clearly and regularly informed as the project progresses.

As my public service in Lewisham comes to an end after 12 years, I want to simply say thank you.

Serving Rushey Green as a Labour & Co-operative councillor has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.

Since first being elected in 2014, I have tried every day to work hard for the community I love, to stand up for local residents, and to do the right thing, even when that was not always the easiest path politically or personally.

Together, we achieved real change.

I was proud to help lead the return of council housebuilding in Lewisham for the first time in a generation, helping deliver more than 2,000 new council rent homes despite huge financial and economic pressures.

When the world was in chaos during COVID, I was proud to support residents on the frontlines alongside volunteers, NHS staff, mutual aid groups and council officers.

I was proud to help deliver Lewishamโ€™s year as Borough of Culture. And here in Catford, I fought to bring investment, culture, housing and life back into our town centre.

I am proud to have helped reopen Catford Library, secure ยฃ7 million investment for the Broadway Theatre, and help deliver major projects that will shape the future of our area for years to come, including Goldsmiths University opening a new Catford campus, the return of Castle Cinema, the community-led Sister Midnight project, and 113 genuinely affordable new homes at Thomas Lane Yard.

None of that was done alone.

Thank you to every resident, volunteer, campaigner, council officer, community organisation, colleague, friend and neighbour who supported me and worked alongside me over the years.

Losing is difficult, but I remain incredibly proud of what we achieved together for Rushey Green and Lewisham.

Whatever happens next, Rushey Green will always be home.
