CND general secretary Sophie Bolt explained that the Chancellor is only putting off hard decisions surrounding cuts until after the next general election, “where declining living standards and cost-of-living pressures will certainly be high on the agenda for voters.”

Ms Bolt told the Morning Star: “The only ones who will be criticising this delayed increase will be profit-hungry arms companies and warmongers.”

Germany is reportedly in talks to contribute funds to Britain's new nuclear weapons programme, also offering to station its Patriot air defence system to key military sites like the Faslane nuclear base.

The discussions follow the announcement of France’s ‘nuclear sharing’ arrangement with nine other European countries, including Germany, Poland, Finland and Norway.

CND General Secretary Sophie Bolt warns:

“These talks show the growing risk of nuclear weapons being used in Europe. They reflect the increasingly coordinated preparations by Britain, France and Germany for the use of nuclear weapons in a war against Russia.

The fact that the talks are also looking at stationing German missiles at Faslane and other military bases indicate the threats of Russian retaliation in such a war. Far from protecting us, they make us all an even greater target and only further undermine British sovereignty."

“The British government's strategy of escalation is very dangerous. We have already seen the nuclear risks from such escalation in 2024 when Russia threatened to use its nuclear weapons against long-range missiles. Burnham needs to end this reckless war-mongering and focus on dialogue and de-escalation.”
