🎥 Worth two minutes of your morning if you live north of Oxford Street.

Councillor Tim Barnes went on BBC London News to say what has still not been resolved before the street closes to traffic on 26 October: cleaning, policing, and how emergency vehicles get where they need to be.

Every one of those arrives here too. New Quebec Street, Portman Village and the roads running up towards Baker Street are what absorbs whatever Oxford Street sends north.

Local councillors Ian, Karen and Barbara are putting the same questions on behalf of this side of the boundary, and would rather have them answered in advance.

🚗 From 26 October, Oxford Street is closed to traffic. Marylebone sits directly behind it, and the question residents keep asking is a simple one: where does that traffic go instead?

Wigmore Street, Henrietta Place, Marylebone Lane and the roads around Cavendish Square already take more than their share of buses, taxis, vans and delivery mopeds. Nobody living on them wants to find out the answer by watching it happen.

Local councillors Ian Rowley, Karen Scarborough and Barbara Arzymanow have been pressing for clarity on exactly that: which routes are expected to carry the extra, how often the streets get swept once they do, and what it means for residents getting in and out of their own roads. The council has written to the Oxford Street Development Corporation, the body running the scheme, setting out its concerns.

Local councillors Ian, Karen and Barbara get more letters about what happens on Marylebone's pavements after dark than about almost anything else, so it is worth being straight about what last week's licensing decision does and does not do here.

Westminster's new Statement of Licensing Policy was agreed at Full Council on 16 September. It changes the cumulative impact rules in Mayfair and in Covent Garden. It changes nothing on Marylebone High Street, Marylebone Lane or New Quebec Street.

What does matter to this ward is what comes next. The council has committed to reviewing the whole policy over the coming year and a half, and that review is open to residents as well as to the trade.

If your version of this is a restaurant's late deliveries, a pavement table a foot from somebody's front door, or the moped stack outside a takeaway, the review is the place to say so, rather than the place to be told about it afterwards.

📋 Budget Choices shuts on Wednesday, and it is not a token exercise for anyone who shops on Marylebone High Street or lives off Baker Street.

Westminster faces a funding reduction of close to 50 per cent. What residents write in this survey feeds into which services are kept and which get scaled back. A quiet response from a ward tends to produce a quiet ward in the outcome.

The survey was being handed out at this month's resilience day, hosted by the Paddington station, where crews and St John Ambulance volunteers went through first aid and getting prepared.

🏆 Local councillors Ian, Karen and Barbara would like to put something positive on the page for once.

The ActiveWestminster Awards 2026 are open for nominations. They are run by the council, and they recognise the people who get Westminster active: nine categories, with Unsung Hero among them and an award for the best club or coach.

Marylebone is not short of candidates, from the school sport to the sessions in Paddington Street Gardens to the clubs that have used the same rooms for decades. What it is short of is people willing to name themselves.

So name somebody else. The form is quick.

What happens to the traffic that currently uses Oxford Street?

It is the question local councillors Ian, Karen and Barbara keep putting, and with the car free section due to open next month it needs an answer in public. The traffic and air quality work for the surrounding residential roads was asked for and has still not surfaced.

The north side of Oxford Street is our side. If displaced traffic ends up on Wigmore Street, George Street or the roads behind them, it is Marylebone that absorbs it.

Local councillors Ian, Karen and Barbara have spent this year on what gets left lying about on Marylebone's pavements. Hire bikes are near the top of that list.

At last week's Full Council the position was set out: about 4,500 penalties issued to the operators this financial year, where the previous twelve months managed a little over 1,200, and £250,000 recovered from them.

Fines are not really the point, though. A bike moved off the pavement is the point.

Local councillors Ian, Karen and Barbara have been pressing for a proper look at the city's active travel schemes. On 16 September one was agreed.

The trigger was Brook Street. Residents there brought 247 names to Full Council, about queues that have built up every day since that road lost one of its two traffic lanes.

Councillors heard that the junction has been visited, revisions are being drawn up, and the aim is to get both lanes back. An order and a consultation have to come before any of it, which is why early next year is an expectation rather than a date.

Traffic does not respect ward boundaries, and what happens at that junction is felt on this side of Oxford Street too. We will report back on what the wider review covers here.
