This DERC webinar will see Laura Griffin and IB PYP educators Rosanne Boutin, Harpreet Mehta and Jane Whittle, collaboratively discuss action, engagement and curriculum design in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP). Drawing on the wider field of global education and learning, the presentation will explore action as a central component of the PYP and connect this to the PYP Transdisciplinary themes which act as the starting point in supporting students’ critical engagement in personal, local and global issues. It will also touch upon issues of critical reflexivity, positionality and supporting contextualisation in diverse school contexts worldwide.

Global Education for Teachers short course – further info

Our FREE online CPD course Global Education for Teachers is starting its next run on 23rd January 2023. The Global Education for Teachers online short course aims to give teachers an introduction to global education, global citizenship education and global learning. It is a three-week course, taking approx. 3 hours per week. The 3-week version is free, but there is a small fee if you want to take longer and complete the course in your own time.

The Global Education for Teachers short course engages teachers with key issues and debates in global education, supports collaboration between teachers around the world and provides practical support on how to introduce global issues into teaching. It is intended to develop teachers’ confidence, knowledge and skills to include global education in teaching and in so doing, better prepare students to take on the global challenges they will face now and in the future.

We have now run the course five times and have had over 6,000 participants located in more than 130 countries. We have had a mix of teachers (and school leaders) mainly working in state schools, international schools and the independent sector. In the courses, teachers have enthusiastically engaged with ideas related to global education, learned about how to apply this to their practice and shared best practice among themselves. It has been great to watch the positive engagement and interaction between teachers across the world. We have also had excellent (5*) feedback from the course!

**Exciting News** are launching a new online FREE short course for educators in schools and unis globally to help embed education for sustainable development in teaching. Starts: 14 Nov - open for enrolments: https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/educating-for-sustainable-development-in-schools-and-universities.

It's a three-week course, with a time commitment of around three hours per week. The first run will begin on 14 November 2022.

The course aims to provide educators with an introduction to key ideas and practices related to education, learning and sustainable development, including issues such as climate change. Through online discussions and activities, participants will engage with diverse perspectives and practices from around the world and also explore current international policy. The course is intended for both educators in higher education as well as teachers in schools, so that participants can talk to one another about their practice and share ideas with peers about how education for sustainable development might link across various levels of education. Participants also have an opportunity to reflect on how their learning from the course can be applied to their practice.

Are you interested in education and global issues? The Institute of Education - UCL's Faculty of Education and Society - offers the MA Global Learning, a unique online programme to support anyone interested in how education responds to and promotes learning about global issues, such as sustainability, climate change and global citizenship. This programme provides participants with skills and knowledge to run educational initiatives such as embedding global and sustainability themes into the curriculum within their institution, or helping schools achieve school awards or run international partnerships. It is particularly suitable for teachers interested in helping their pupils engage with global issues, and people working with NGOs to promote approaches to education that reflect these issues, or those working in education policy. Teachers who apply who have recently qualified in the UK may be able to use some of the M-level credits they gained at the end of their PGCE as partial credit.

Applications close on 13 May 2022. If you are interested in developing your skills in preparing your learners for living in a world of increasingly complex global challenges, then please consider applying. You can study full-time over a year, or part-time over 2-5 years.

NEW ONLINE MASTERS. The Development Education Research Centre (DERC) is launching an MA in Global Learning. This builds on our very successful MA in Development Education and Global Learning, but adds more focus on climate education and education for sustainable development. It would suit educators interested in global education, global citizenship education, social justice education and education for sustainable development.
