Today marks the 46th anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements and the founding of the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union "Solidarność." 🤝

The bravery and solidarity shown by those who took part in protests across Poland laid the foundation for the state's eventual transformation, culminating in the partly free elections of 1989 and setting off a chain of events that would reshape Eastern Europe. 🗳️

Solidarity's success in dismantling communist rule in Poland is also linked to the UK. Through the support of the British government, trade unions, and everyday people, funding printing activities and providing international legitimacy for the movement by speaking out about Solidarity's actions and meeting with its leaders, Britain played a real part in this story. This support, for which we remain grateful, wouldn't have been possible without the hard work of Poles in the UK, including the BBC's Polish Section, which shared the latest updates on events in Poland. 🇬🇧

Solidarity and its ideals live on: from the numerous memorials and museums across the country, including the European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk, to the daily actions of people such as Poles supporting Ukrainians against Russian aggression. The values of empathy, solidarity, and appreciation for freedom continue to guide Poland today. 🇵🇱

Honouring the Polish Air Force takes on particular significance in the UK. 🕯️

Today, Ambassador Rafał Wiśniewski, with Colonel Krzysztof P***k, joined in commemorating the Polish Airmen of World War II at the Polish Air Force Memorial in Northolt. As in previous years, this annual event honours the bravery and sacrifice of the Polish pilots who, among other incredible feats, fought in the Battle of Britain. ✈️

The ceremony brought together representatives of British local government, Polish and British military delegations, defence attachés, the Polish diaspora in the UK, and families of the fallen airmen. 📜

Despite the rainy weather, the event was well attended, including by veterans themselves. Among them was Marian Słomka, a WWII veteran and RAF engineer who contributed to the Allied war effort and is now over 100 years old.

Today, we celebrate Polish Aviation Day (Święto Lotnictwa Polskiego). On this occasion, we want to express our gratitude to airmen, both historic and contemporary, who have remained vigilant and defended Poland in times of trial.

Polish aviation is at the forefront of ensuring the security of not only Poland, but the region as a whole and NATO's eastern flank, demonstrating our commitment to the principles of collective security and international defence cooperation.

Polish airmen and their efforts are particularly significant in the UK, where they are recognised for their contributions to the war effort during the Battle of Britain. In their honour, they are immortalised in memorials such as the one in Northolt. Their bravery also helped inspire the signing of the Polish-British Security and Defence Partnership, also known as the Northolt Treaty.

These are just some of the questions that Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski, tackles in his "By Invitation" piece for The Economist. He outlines the West's long effort to bring Russia into the international order as a partner rather than an adversary. An effort that, in the end, seems to have failed because Russia turned down these advances.

With that bitter pill swallowed, how do we even begin to look ahead and plan for what's next?

Russia strategically deploys drones, cyberattacks, sabotage, GPS jamming, and information warfare to try to fracture the West. NATO needs to understand that these aren't just ways of "poking the bear". They're efforts to push the boundary of what's acceptable further and further, until the only remaining escalation is outright attack.

Europe must be ready to defend itself and demonstrate its resilience.
