The Bahamas Participates in Caribbean Regional Alternative Fuels and New Technologies Seminar:

The Bahamas was represented at a regional seminar on Alternative Fuels and New Technologies for the Safe Operation of Ships, held from 3–7 August 2026 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Larez Pinder, Marine Investigator with The Bahamas Maritime Authority’s Investigations Department, and Lonna Bethel, Assistant Port Controller with the Port Department, participated in the five-day programme alongside maritime professionals from maritime administrations across the Caribbean.

Delivered by the World Maritime University (WMU), commissioned by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), in collaboration with the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre (MTCC) Caribbean and the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), the seminar focused on building regional capacity for the safe adoption of alternative fuels and emerging maritime technologies.

Sessions addressed the technical, safety and operational considerations associated with fuels such as ammonia, methanol and hydrogen, as well as new technologies including batteries and carbon capture and storage. Participants also took part in field visits, group exercises, and practical training designed to strengthen their ability to support the education of seafarers and shore-based personnel.

For the BMA, participation in the seminar supports the continued development of its technical expertise as the maritime industry transitions to alternative fuels and new technologies. Keeping team members informed of emerging technologies, associated risks and evolving safety requirements strengthens the Authority’s ability to investigate marine incidents effectively, provide informed advice and guidance to clients, and support the safe operation of Bahamian-registered vessels and ships operating in The Bahamas and broader Caribbean region.

The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) is pleased to welcome this year's cohort of summer students, who are gaining valuable experience across the Authority's offices in Nassau and London.

Working alongside experienced professionals, the students will gain first-hand exposure to the work of an international ship registry while developing practical skills and a deeper understanding of the diverse career opportunities available within the global maritime industry.

This year's summer students are Maddison Moss, Helio Vitoriano, Joe Wigglesworth, Rhyan Rigby, Lauren King, Harmony Lundy, and Gabriella Francis, who will gain valuable exposure to a cross-section of the Authority's operations through placements in Registration, Information Technology, and the Seafarers & Manning Department.

The BMA remains committed to supporting education, professional development, and the growth of the next generation of maritime professionals. Through initiatives such as its summer student programme, the Authority continues to invest in developing local and international talent while providing meaningful opportunities to explore careers in the maritime sector.

BMA Strengthens Shipping Partnerships in Qingdao:

A delegation from the Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA), led by Asia Regional Director Captain Jahangir Hussain, visited Qingdao, China, from 6–10 July 2026 for the Authority's first-ever promotional week in the city.

The visit marked an important milestone in the BMA's engagement with the Chinese shipping market, providing an opportunity to meet with existing and prospective clients, as well as a range of stakeholders from the local maritime community. While the programme focused on Qingdao, several companies travelled from Ningbo and neighbouring cities to attend meetings, reflecting the growing interest in The Bahamas Flag among Chinese shipowners and managers.

The promotional week forms part of the BMA's wider strategy to strengthen its presence in China and build closer relationships with one of the world's most important shipping markets. Discussions focused on the benefits of the Bahamas Flag, including its commitment to quality, responsive customer service and strong Port State Control performance.

Captain Jahangir Hussain said: "Our first promotional week in Qingdao provided an excellent opportunity to engage directly with both existing and prospective clients, better understand their priorities, and demonstrate the level of support the Bahamas Maritime Authority provides. The positive response we received reflects the value of building relationships face to face, and we look forward to further strengthening our engagement with the Chinese shipping community."

The visit reinforces the BMA's commitment to maintaining a strong presence in key international shipping markets through regular engagement, technical support and long-term partnerships with owners, managers and industry stakeholders.

BMA Supports the Next Generation of Bahamian Maritime Professionals:

The Bahamas Maritime Cadet Corps (BMCC) has celebrated another successful year, with 166 cadets graduating across six islands, continuing to build a strong pipeline of young Bahamians equipped with the knowledge, skills, and discipline to pursue careers in the maritime sector.

An increasing number of this year's graduates have expressed an interest in continuing their maritime education at the tertiary level, with the majority applying to the Lowell J. Mortimer Maritime Academy. This encouraging trend reflects growing awareness of the diverse career opportunities available within the maritime industry and the continued success of initiatives to promote the sector to young Bahamians.

Cadets from across The Bahamas continue to demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and practical skills. Participants in Andros and Exuma also earned their STCW certification while enrolled in the programme, providing them with a globally recognised qualification and a competitive advantage as they pursue careers in maritime and related industries.

The Bahamas Maritime Authority congratulates the graduating cadets and their instructors and extends its appreciation to the programme's partners, including the shipowners who provide valuable shipboard exposure, for their continued commitment to developing the next generation of Bahamian maritime professionals.

Honouring Seafarers on Day of the Seafarer 2026

On Day of the Seafarer 2026, The Bahamas Maritime Authority joins the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the global maritime community in recognising the men and women whose skill, resilience and dedication keep world trade moving.

Every voyage depends on seafarers. They prepare vessels for sea, navigate changing conditions, manage complex operations, maintain safety on board and sustain the movement of essential goods across the world. Their work is often carried out far from home and out of public view, but its importance is felt every day by communities, businesses and economies around the globe.

This year’s Day of the Seafarer theme, “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks,” is an important reminder that seafarers do not only carry cargo. They also carry the pressures, responsibilities and risks that come with life and work at sea, including long voyages, demanding operational conditions and the realities of operating in an increasingly complex maritime environment.

The Bahamas Maritime Authority remains committed to supporting seafarers through high standards of training, certification, safe manning and the protection of their welfare and rights. These responsibilities are central to safe, secure and responsible shipping, and they reflect The BMA’s wider commitment to quality, compliance and care for those serving on Bahamian-registered ships.

On this Day of the Seafarer, The BMA thanks seafarers everywhere for their professionalism, commitment and contribution to global trade. Their service is essential to international shipping and deserves recognition, respect and continued support across the maritime industry.

The Bahamas reaffirmed its commitment to the international maritime community at Posidonia 2026, with the Hon. Leon Lundy, Minister of Transport, leading a high-level delegation to Greece during his first international maritime engagement since taking office.

The visit highlighted the importance of the longstanding relationship between The Bahamas and the Greek shipping community, while providing an opportunity to engage with shipowners, industry partners, and government officials on key issues shaping the future of shipping.

The Bahamas Maritime Authority has launched its new Blockchain-Secured Digital Seafarer Record Book (DSRB), marking a significant milestone in the digitalisation of maritime administration.

The new platform replaces traditional paper-based documentation with a secure, fully digital and internationally interoperable system for recording and verifying sea service. Developed in collaboration with industry partners and successfully piloted with Carnival Cruise Line, the DSRB enhances efficiency, transparency, security, and ease of verification for seafarers, shipowners, and maritime administrations.

Available from 1 June 2026, the system forms part of the BMA’s broader programme of regulatory modernisation and digital transformation.
