🎉 Congratulations to Dr Adnan Mehonic on Winning the Prestigious EU-40 Materials Prize

We are proud to share that Dr Adnan Mehonic, Associate Professor in Nanoelectronics and RAEng Senior Research Fellow at UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering, has been awarded the EU-40 Materials Prize by the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS).

Each year, this award is presented to a single researcher based in Europe who demonstrates exceptional promise as a future leader in materials science. It honours an individual whose work is already making a significant impact and helping to shape the future of the field.

As part of the award, Dr Mehonic will be delivering a plenary talk and receiving the prize at the 2025 E-MRS Spring Meeting in Strasbourg next week. Past recipients include several distinguished UK researchers, placing Dr Mehonic among a prestigious group of researchers.

Congratulations to our PhD student, Hadumanro Randani Malau, on receiving the Best Paper award at the prestigious 29th IEEE ICT Conference on 📡📶 this year held at Institut Teknologi Del in Indonesia.

The paper, coauthored by Malau and UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering’s Dr Kin-Fai Tong and Professor Kai-Kit Wong, explores Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) as a technology for 5G and 6G that is more efficient and intelligent than traditional reflective surfaces in current wireless networks.

Current traditional reflective surfaces have little control over how or where the signals bounce, but IRS can control the direction in which the signals bounce back and interact with the environment. This enhances the reliability of data transferring and processing, and, being low-power and low-complexity sensors, they have good potential for scaleability. However, there are barriers to the deployment of these surfaces, especially in prospective 6G networks, due to bandwidth limitations and restricted reflection phase ranges in their unit cells. UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering’s Hadumanro Malau receives best paper for work on Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) for next generation wireless networks.

The Optical Networks Group (ONG) within UCL's Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, has been collaborating with Corning Incorporated, a global innovator in material science, since ONG's inception in 1994.

Their collaboration has already addressed issues such as how to achieve long-distance transmissions over challenging terrains and is now looking ahead to anticipate and address the sector’s biggest future challenges.
