Supporting offenders to turn their lives around is an important part of cutting crime and making our communities safer.

The Lord Chancellor visited HMP Northumberland to see how prison and probation staff are working together to support rehabilitation.

From visiting an incentivised substance-free living wing that supports drug recovery, to the Offender Management Unit where staff prepare prisoners for release, the visit highlighted the work taking place to tackle the causes of offending and reduce the risk of future crime.

Welcome to Liverpool, a boxing heartland 🥊

Unpaid work, also known as Community Payback, is a court-ordered punishment where offenders pay back to the local communities they’ve harmed through hard, manual work.

The work by offenders at Jubilee Sports Bank, a valued grassroots sports centre, helps to keep costs down, ensuring their exercise and boxing classes are accessible for everyone.

As well as helping local community hubs, community sentences are more effective at reducing rates of reoffending than short-term prison sentences.

Meet the magistrates changing what people picture when they hear the word "magistrate.”

Minister Sackman joined Anna and Aneesa, two young magistrates, for an honest conversation about what the role is really like, who can do it, and why it matters.

Every year, magistrates make decisions that shape thousands of lives across England and Wales. They're not judges or lawyers. They're volunteers from ordinary backgrounds, trained and supported to deliver justice in their own communities, committing to a minimum of 13 days a year.

Victims and survivors deserve to feel safe.

For the first time anywhere in the world, the most serious sexual and violent offenders released from prison can be subject to Restriction Zones, preventing them from entering areas victims live in and regularly visit.

Tailored to individual victims' circumstances, these restrictions are backed by robust monitoring technology and offenders who breach them could be recalled to prison.
