CAR PARK UPDATES - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Windmill Car Park - The vehicle access gate on Windmill Road will be locked at 6.30pm from Sunday 18 October.

We move to winter hours from Sunday 25 October when the gate will be locked at 5.30pm until mid-February.

SPRINGWELL CAR PARK (Off Camp Road) - OVERNIGHT CLOSURES FROM 25 OCTOBER - We are experiencing an increase in antisocial behaviour and incidents involving vehicles accessing the Commons at night. We have therefore taken the decision to trial locking the car park overnight (5pm to 6am) from Sunday 25 October in an effort to reduce this unauthorised access and support our efforts to protect the Commons and keep them safe.

The closure is in line with the Commons' byelaws, which prohibit unauthorised vehicles from remaining on the Commons between dusk and dawn, and also in line with the decision to lock the gate at WIndmill Road overnight.

We would kindly ask that anyone using the car park should ensure their vehicle is removed before 5pm, as access will not be available again until the gates reopen at 6am the following morning. Pedestrian access remains unchanged.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding as we take this step to address these ongoing issues.

We’re sorry to start the week with bad news, but we have to share these upsetting images of vandalism that we have experienced on the Commons recently – which demonstrate the challenges of managing an open space in London.

As you can see, one of our diggers was extensively vandalised, with most of its windows smashed.

Not only is this criminal activity, but the mini digger is a vital piece of equipment used for conservation across the Commons.

Please remain vigilant and if you see anything suspicious on the Commons, do contact the Ranger’s Office. The Police have been informed about this incident.

In a multi-partner project led by Citizen Zoo and Habitats & Heritage, today we reintroduced 81 Tower Mustard (Turritis glabra) plants to Putney Heath. They have been patiently grown from seed by volunteers over this spring and summer in what has been a very difficult growing period. We are very grateful for their dedication and effort.

The species has also been reintroduced at three other locations and their abundance has been increased at a third.

Reminder: please do not remove fungi!

A variety of fungi can be found around the Commons, which is ecologically important. Removing fungi is damaging to the habitats in our care.

Following recent reports of foraging for fungi on the Commons, we'd like to remind everyone that foraging is not permitted on the Commons, as per the Commons byelaws:

No unauthorised person shall cut, fell, take, or sell, any gorse, heather, timber, or other trees, shrubs, brushwood, furze, fern, rushes, grass, or other plant, or natural product of the Commons on or from any part of the Commons.

But what you can do is enjoy discovering them and take photos (we'd love to see what you find!).

Thank you for helping us to protect our beloved green space!

We're hosting our annual pumpkin hunt this Halloween. Bring your little monsters to run wild around the woodlands in search of pumpkins, meet real reptiles and snakes and visit the haunted windmill!

Of course we don't use scarecrows, we use windmills!

New scrapes in the garden by the Rangers Office have been sown with native wildflower seed. These spinning windmills are helping to protect the seeds whilst this new habitat establishes.

'Tis the season for autumnal walks

We may be biased, but we think the Commons are one of the very best places in London for them.

Last chance for second-hand books!
We held a second-hand book sale as part of our Open Day and we’ve kept it going, but this is the final week.
Please come and browse and pick up some books, and, if you can, leave a donation to help care for these Commons.

📍Find them outside the Rangers Office at the end of Windmill Road.

Any books remaining will be passed on to another charity next week. Thank you to everyone who has donated books, but please don’t bring us any more, as we now need the space back.
