Race on the Agenda stands in solidarity with every Black and Global Majority person, migrant community, and refugee family caught up in the violence that swept through Belfast last night.

What we witnessed was not a protest.
These are racist hate crimes.

We remain concerned about about how some politicians continue to use irresponsible language, that only serves to divide us.

It is political opportunism, plain and simple.

mourns the loss of music and community pioneer Kanya King, founder of the MOBO Awards.

Kanya’s story was one of tenacity, purpose, and community. Through her vision and leadership, she created opportunities and opened doors to generations of young creatives.

She created an award show that made the invisible visible that celebrates Black culture and champions Black artists across genres at a time when Black artists were excluded from mainstream recognition.

Beyond the awards, she also helped build initiatives such as the MOBO Trust, supporting and investing in young and emerging creatives through funding, mentorship, and access to opportunity.

We are devastated by this loss and extend our condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched.

Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

Race on the Agenda want to express our solidarity with Birmingham City University students and teachers impacted with the threatened closure of the Black Studies course. While this issue is immediate to BCU, it reflects a wider trend across universities: the erosion and deprioritisation of Black Studies and culture-based academic programmes across the UK.
 
These academic fields are essential spaces for decolonial thinking, historical understanding, representation, and the study of race, identity, and power. Thus, removing them is regressive and ahistorical.
 
We have found that this is not an isolated case but part of a growing trend across universities.

Black women deserve to be protected.

There is a silent crisis in the UK a growing number of Black Women in the UK are going missing, yet many cases continue to recieve inadequate support from officials and a lack of media attention.

Here at Race on the Agenda we have been working closely with our allies and stakeholders to push the Renters Rights Bill and campaign for racial discrimination to be considered in the Act.

Today we welcome the progress of the Renters Right Act as it comes into force today, but recognise that there is still much further to go to realise racial justice in housing.

The abolition of Section 21 ‘no fault’ eviction is a particularly progressive step to supporting and safeguarding tenants.

Black and Global Majority tenants face systematic barriers in the private rented sector. So, banning no-fault evictions, bidding wars and discriminatory rejection are positive steps.

Research shows that Black and Global Majority renters are:

2x more likely to rent privately than White British households

4.5x more likely to be rejected if you have children

9% of Black renters report being denied housing in the last five years because of their race, compared to just 0.3% of White renters.

4x more likely to be asked for 6+ months rents upfront

This Act is progress. But progress is not justice.

Despite overwhelming evidence, amendments designed to tackle the racialised nature of housing were repeatedly deemed ‘out of scope’ during the Bill’s passage.

The Act contains no explicit race-based protections, no racial impact monitoring requirements, and no obligation on landlords or local authorities to collect or act on ethnicity data.

We would like to thank members of the House of Lords, including Baroness Janke, for their efforts in raising this issue and highlighting the work of Race on the Agenda and in advocating for the inclusion of protections against racial discrimination.

We welcome these changes, but the work is far from over. We will continue to monitor developments closely and campaign alongside our allies across the housing sector.
