Set up by Parliament in 1997, but independent of Government, we are the body that regulates the architects’ profession in the UK. We do this by setting and maintaining standards for education and practice, and only those people on our Register are allowed by law to call themselves an architect. When consumers use an architect from our Register, they can be confident that they are using a genuine p

rofessional who has both met the standards that we set, and who is guided by a professional code of conduct. We are pleased to announce that the Privy Council has reappointed Alan Kershaw as Chair of ARB for a further two-year term, commencing on 20 June 2026.

Since 2020, Alan has overseen a significant programme of reform across architectural regulation, including changes to education and training, the introduction of a mandatory CPD scheme, and a modernised Code of Conduct.

His reappointment provides continuity as we continue our work to ensure regulation remains effective and proportionate.

ARB has confirmed that Heriot-Watt University and Southampton Solent University are now providers of ARB accredited master’s-level qualifications under ARB’s new education framework.

This marks a significant milestone in the transition to the revised framework, with these becoming the first qualifications from newly participating providers to achieve ARB accreditation under the new accreditation framework.

We welcome this further step in the Government’s work to consider how standards, competence and accountability can be strengthened across the built environment.

ARB is introducing a new, streamlined approach to routes to registration, designed to be clearer, fairer and more accessible, while continuing to protect the public.

Planned for implementation by spring 2027, the changes include:

• A new Registration Assurance Process (RAP)
• New routes to registration
• A new approach to the Prescribed Examination
• A new Readiness for Practice UK (RfPUK) module for international applicants

As part of these reforms, individuals with ARB-accredited Part 2 and Part 3 qualifications (or Part 2 via Prescribed Exam) will no longer require Part 1 to apply for registration, and the Part 1 Prescribed Examination will be discontinued following final sittings in 2026.

ARB is proposing a set of changes to improve the trainee experience of professional practical experience. As part of these changes, we have prepared new supporting guidance for both employers and trainees.

This guidance advises on what we expect from both parties, in terms of responsibility and supervision.

The proposals are currently being consulted on, and the consultation closes today at 11.59pm.

- a coordinating role for learning providers
- a new Trainee Record of Experience to support reflection and progress
- new guidance for employers and trainees
