Long grass, seed heads and wilder patches might look a little untamed, but they can provide valuable food and shelter for insects and other wildlife.

Sometimes, leaving nature to do its thing is exactly what a healthy green space needs.

Next time you’re at Firs Farm, see what you can spot in the wilder areas.

A special view from Firs Farm Wetlands 🌘

One of our regular visitors captured this striking time-lapse sequence of the eclipse from the A10 end of the wetlands.

There were plenty of people gathered to watch, and he and his companion were even able to lend eclipse glasses to others who hadn’t brought any.

We love seeing Firs Farm being enjoyed in moments like this, not just for the wildlife and green space, but as a place where people come together and share an experience.

Wasps seem to be everywhere in August, especially when you’re trying to eat outside.

But there’s more to them than stealing a bit of your picnic.

Wasps help keep populations of other insects in check by hunting prey such as flies, aphids and caterpillars. They also visit flowers for nectar and can help with pollination as they move from bloom to bloom.

So while they might not be everyone’s favourite summer visitor, they do have an important role to play in the natural world.

Wetlands are sometimes dismissed as “just swamps”, but they do so much more than that.

Places like Firs Farm Wetlands help hold and slow down rainwater, provide food and shelter for wildlife, and create valuable green space for people to enjoy too.

They’re not just important for nature. They’re important for the whole community.
Next time you visit, take a moment to look a little closer at everything this space is quietly doing.

We were delighted to welcome the Mayor of Enfield, Emma Supple, to Firs Farm Wetlands and Community Hub on 23 July.

Emma is pictured here with our Chair, Toni Guiver, and Trustees Ni Seeker and Peter Charalambous.

She thoroughly enjoyed her visit and passed on her thanks to all the volunteers and trustees whose hard work helps to care for the wetlands and keep the Community Hub running.

Could you spend 15 minutes spotting butterflies?

The Big Butterfly Count from is happening now, and it’s a simple way to slow down and notice what’s around you.

You can take part at Firs Farm, in your garden, or on any local walk. Just find a sunny spot, watch for butterflies for 15 minutes, and record what you see.

Around Firs Farm, look near flowers, long grass, hedges and warm sheltered places. You might be surprised by how much you notice when you stop for a little while.

Dragonfly or damselfly?

At first glance, they can look quite similar, especially when you spot one quickly near the water.

This one is a dragonfly. One of the easiest clues is how it rests: dragonflies usually hold their wings open and flat, rather than folding them back along the body.

They’re often seen around wetlands in summer, especially near water, reeds and sunny spots.

Where do you always stop for a minute at Firs Farm?

Maybe it’s by the water, along the path, near the trees, or somewhere you usually spot the birds.

One of the lovely things about Firs Farm is that everyone seems to have their own little favourite place. The spot they pause, look around, and take a breath before carrying on.
