Twenty-five years after the scene that shocked the world, an image of Palestinian child Muhammad al-Durra has moved from television screens to the pages of Egypt’s baccalaureate textbook, in a lesson covering the Second Palestinian Intifada in 2000.
The image appears in the new curriculum in a lesson titled “The Second Palestinian Intifada 2000”, accompanied by a direct caption reading: “The moment Muhammad al-Durra was shot”. The image, which has remained in the memory of an entire generation, has thus become part of a history lesson for a new generation of Egyptian students in classrooms.
The image is not presented in the textbook as a scene separate from the wider Palestinian issue, but as part of a historical sequence covering developments in the conflict and peace efforts, leading to the Second Palestinian Intifada and subsequent developments in the Gaza Strip. Reports on the curriculum have described the inclusion of al-Durra’s image as a symbol of the human dimension of the Second Intifada.
Jamal al-Durra, the Palestinian child’s father, said the importance of including his son’s image in the curriculum goes beyond students knowing Muhammad’s name or recognising his photograph. It also allows a new generation to understand that behind the events and dates they read about in history books were children and civilians who lived through fear and paid the price of conflict.
Muhammad’s father hopes his son’s story will become a gateway to understanding the human side of the Palestinian issue, so that uprisings, wars and negotiations do not appear to students merely as political events and dates, but as events experienced by real people, with children and civilians among those who bore the greatest consequences.
