A new, life-extending drug for ovarian cancer which was trialled at UCLH is now available on the NHS.

It is the first new addition to NHS treatment for ovarian cancer in over 20 years, following an announcement by NHS England.

Dr Rowan Miller (pictured), who ran the clinical trials at UCLH in research supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research Biomedical Research Centre at UCLH, said: "Finally, there's a drug that's available, that improves survival for this group of patients and in addition, the patients get on with the treatment well and find it easier to manage than standard chemotherapy.”

“It’s like night and day,” says Katie Tinkler of her life before and after CAR T cell therapy. She suffered from lupus for years before she went into remission, and credits her participation in the CARLYSLE trial with changing her life. “I can participate in life now,” she says.

The pioneering clinical trial led by UCLH and UCL is showing early promise for people with severe lupus who have exhausted existing treatment options.

Early results from the ongoing Phase I CARLYSLE trial, sponsored by Autolus, have been encouraging. As of November 2025, nine adults with severe, treatment-resistant lupus had received the treatment. All had highly active disease despite multiple previous therapies, and most had lupus nephritis, a serious form of the disease that affects the kidneys.

Researchers found that five of the first six patients treated at the lower dose achieved remission according to standard lupus criteria, with improvements emerging within months of treatment.

Patients also experienced rapid reductions in disease activity, alongside improvements in important laboratory markers associated with lupus.

Katie hopes her experience offers encouragement to others living with severe autoimmune disease. Meanwhile, UCLH and partners are continuing work on severl clinical trials testing CAR T cell therapy in autoimmune diseases in the hope of finding new ways of improving patients’ lives.

Happy !

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who volunteers with us. Last year, 735 people gave up their time to help others, and this had a huge impact on patient experience.

Together, our volunteers gave over 36,000 hours of their time to UCLH. 287 of those volunteers were new to UCLH, reflecting the generosity and enthusiasm of our local community.

Alacoe (pictured right), who gives up her time as a Paediatric and Adolescent Support Volunteer on T11 and T12, said, “I’ve been volunteering at UCLH for nearly a year, having finished my undergraduate degree in psychology.

"The staff have really made me feel part of the team here. Volunteering has allowed me to meet and support a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds. The variety is brilliant, and no two days are the same!”

Thank you for making a difference to patients, families and visitors💙

Early results show a new immunotherapy medicine for Alzheimer’s disease is safe and researchers are hopeful it may impact on disease progression.

UCLH’s Professor Catherine Mummery is leading the study into ImmunoBrain's investigational medicine that targets an immune pathway that researchers believe may play a role in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological diseases.

Professor Mummery said: "There remains a significant unmet need for disease-modifying therapies that address the underlying biology of Alzheimer's Disease. Early evidence suggests that short, intermittent exposure to immune checkpoint modulation potentially offers a new therapeutic approach for Alzheimer's disease by activating the peripheral immune system to help restore the brain's natural repair process. I look forward to seeing additional clinical data for this program."
