CFAB For more: linktr.ee/cfabuk We also deliver specialised training in the field of international social work.

Children and Families Across Borders (CFAB) is a unique UK-based charity which protects children who have been separated from family members as a consequence of trafficking, abduction, migration, divorce, conflict and asylum. What we do:

CFAB is the only UK charity with an international children’s social work team and the only UK member of the International Social Service (ISS) network. We identi

fy and protect the most vulnerable children who have been separated from their families in complex and often dangerous situations due to conflict, trafficking, migration, family break down or asylum-related issues. Working with partners in 130 countries, we are experts in social work in an international context, cross-border child protection cases, care proceedings requiring cross-border cooperation and overseas placements. As well as offering a wide range of case management services, we run a free national Advice Line to provide guidance and practical support on child protection issues.

1 in 3 children in London are growing up in poverty.

Many of these children are also escaping war and displacement.

CFAB's specialist, trauma-informed social services helps these children rebuild their lives with safety, stability, and a sense of belonging.

In just four days, we are taking part in during which your donation to our social services will be matched, doubling the impact you have on children growing up in poverty.

Help us to bring more children out of hardship and towards hope by donating on 2 June.

We were proud to have CFAB represented by our CEO, Carolyn Housman, at the King’s Garden Party this May.

The event was recognising the impact of our work supporting children and families across borders.

This recognition belongs to everyone who champions children’s rights, family connection and culturally informed practice, contributing to a world where children are safe, happy, and supported by their families.

We are hugely grateful to all of our supporters, partners and colleagues who continue to make this life-changing work possible 💛

This month, our inter-country social worker Michael Nwoye, was invited to speak on behalf of CFAB at the Family Law Bar Association (FLBA)’s 43rd Cumberland Lodge Conference in Windsor.

Michael addressed the real-world challenges of cross-border safeguarding and enforcing child welfare decisions in international family cases.

Michael highlighted the importance of immigration status for children and prospective carers, the complexities of obtaining overseas assessments, and why local social workers in the countries where prospective carers live are crucial to culturally informed and credible assessments.

The 1996 Hague Convention also remained central to his discussion, as it provides a framework for jurisdiction, emergency protection, and international cooperation in cross-border family cases.

🌍️ Child protection work of the International Social Services, like CFAB, centres around the implementation of key international standards.

Importantly, these standards include the 1996 Hague Convention.

This short guide covers cross border casework in 1996 Hague Convention matters. It includes jurisdiction; applicable law; recognition; enforcement and co-operation in respect of parental responsibility; measures for the protection of children; and the importance of co-operation, especially between central authorities.

Refugee and asylum-seeking young people experience immense challenges, including trauma, separation and loss on their journey to a new country. They may arrive with fragmented memories, little understanding of their past, and a need to make sense of their experiences.

This we are sharing how CFAB works with refugee and asylum-seeking young people to take action for good mental health by offering a pathway for these young people to heal from their trauma, understand their identity, and build a sense of belonging.

Through our Life Story work, in collaboration with Blue Cabin, CFAB creates a safe, compassionate, and culturally-sensitive space to work with each child or young person and help them piece together their journey and build hope for their future 🌻

12/05/2026

Over the past three decades, surrogacy has become an increasingly popular method of alternative reproductive technology. It is, however, a practice that raises a number of human rights, ethical and legal questions.

Surrogacy involves the carrying of a child by a surrogate mother, with the intention that another person or persons will be the parent(s) of that child.

But can a surrogacy arrangement constitute the sale of children; and how can the human dignity of those involved be protected?

For more details on how surrogacy arrangements might endanger the best interests of the child and what principles you can use in your own work go to https://www.cfab.org.uk/ for the ISS factsheet for professionals.
