In just a few weeks’ time, the Chipping Barnet Conservatives will begin the process of choosing their candidate for the next general election. After careful reflection, I have decided not to put my name forward to be that candidate. Nor will I be applying to stand in other constituencies.

I believe the Conservatives have a great chance of regaining Chipping Barnet, but it is time to hand over to someone new to tackle that challenge.

I am grateful to Kemi Badenoch for having appointed me to the Conservative candidates list. I strongly back her leadership. I will continue to campaign energetically for the Conservative cause, in Barnet and beyond.

I would like to thank the Chipping Barnet Conservative Association for choosing me as their candidate in successive elections; and I thank the residents of Chipping Barnet for electing me five times to represent them in Parliament.

I feel immensely privileged to have been given the opportunity to serve the community in which I live as its MP, including over four years around the Cabinet table as Secretary of State.

Now I will be focusing on the writing and academic career (university teaching and research) to which I have returned after my stint in elected office. I am delighted to say that this will include research for an MPhil/PhD at UCL starting in October.

I took part in a panel for the last night to discuss how to deliver nature conservation and recovery.

It was good to hear the ideas brought forward by participants. A point which was emphasised was the need to support farmers as stewards of our natural environment. We considered the important role new technology - such as gene editing of crops, AI, and drones - can play it ensuring that we maintain food security whilst at the same time expanding space for nature and giving more effective protection to habitats and biodiversity.

Appearing on Iain Dale's Cross Question panel on LBC last night, alongside James Schneider, Kiki McDonough and Christian Wolmar. I highlighted concerns that the policies announced by the new Prime Minister will lead to higher taxes unless the Government gets the welfare bill under control.

This is an article I published earlier today in India’s Sunday Guardian newspaper. It was prompted by a visit to the first ever women’s test match played at Lord’s. That match between England and India was a reminder of how sport can play a positive part in women’s empowerment.

I welcome today's news that support for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps will be banned in the UK. I campaigned for years for the group to be proscribed. Now at last this is going to happen. The IRGC sponsor and organise terrorism and conflict through their proxies Hezbollah and Hamas. They are an evil organisation which does great harm both domestically in Iran and internationally.

Last week's savage knife attack in Belfast was truly shocking. It was also deeply disturbing to see rioting break out. I was invited on to Sky News to discuss this, as a former Northern Ireland Secretary. This gave me the chance to point out the violent racist disorder is not a way to defend a community or a culture. It is not only wrong, but entirely counter-productive. I commend the PSNI for their work in tackling the disturbances.

Great day at the Barnet Medieval Festival. In 1471, Barnet was the location for a major victory for the Yorkist side in the Wars of the Roses. It is the site of the only recognised battlefield in Greater London.

Very bad news for Barnet today: Sadiq Khan's Deputy Mayor, Jules Pipe, has approved TfL's plan to build blocks of flats over High Barnet station car park. The loss of this park-and-ride facility will cause big problems for commuters, especially people with impaired mobility who depend on their cars to get to the station and cannot easily use alternative modes of transport. Closing the car park is also expected to have a negative impact on women's safety, particularly shift workers travelling home late at night.

I campaigned against these blocks for years as MP. So I joined other Barnet residents at City Hall this morning to make the case against this plan by TfL.

Yesterday I was honoured to address a rally in Trafalgar Square to mark Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day. On 18th May every year, Tamils in the UK and around the world remember the many thousands of people who lost their lives during the closing stages of the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009.

The International Committee of the Red Cross described what happened as "an unimaginable human catastrophe”.

No fire zones were declared by the Sri Lankan Government. Civilians were told to relocate there. The Sri Lankan armed forces then fired ruthlessly into the area, knowing it was packed with civilians, crammed into what they had been told would be a place of safety.

During my time as MP, I repeatedly spoke out on the importance of holding to account those responsible for the war crimes committed at Mullivaikkal. I repeated that in my speech yesterday. I called on the UK government to use all possible diplomatic means to push for negotiations to deliver a new settlement in Sri Lanka which guarantees Tamil rights, Tamil equality, and Tamil participation in power-sharing government.
