The imposition of austerity has no democratic mandate from the public. Nobody voted for the privatisation of the NHS, or the Bedroom Tax, or the tripling of tuition fees. Our system of parliamentary democracy is unable to deal with the consequences of a social crisis it helped to create. We are facing record homelessness, while many more struggle to keep a roof over their heads, record numbers are relying on food banks to feed their families, and record numbers are facing fuel poverty as energy prices rise eight times faster than wages. Meanwhile inequality is reaching levels not seen since the nineteenth century. Nobody voted for this. It is becoming clear to millions in this country that our system of democracy increasingly functions in the interests of big business and a tiny wealthy elite. It is for these reasons that will continue to carry out periodic occupations of Parliament Square in order to demand fundamental change to Britain’s corporate controlled Democracy. Today marks 80 years since the beginning of the 1946 squatting wave in Britain.

On 8 May 1946, a family unable to find housing moved into an abandoned anti-aircraft camp in Scunthorpe. Within months, thousands of families across the UK occupied empty military camps and buildings during the postwar housing crisis.

80 years later, the questions still remain:
Why are homes left empty while people struggle to live securely?
Who are our homes really for?
Homes were empty then. Homes are empty now. About a million of them.
There are already housing protest occupations happening in the country (the Lesnes Estate Protest Occupation in Thamesmead recently passed year 2) as the repeating patterns of history build momentum for a new wave of grassroots actions while the UK housing movement has been rebooting...

Is estate regeneration still failing Londoners?

The test case is the Lesnes Estate, where there is an active housing protest occupation running which will be 2 years old on the 4th of April 2026.

Films and TV shows like The Clockwork Orange, Misfits and Supacell were filmed at the estate among others.
