October Object of the Month – Ornamental key (1920s) and memorandum (1973)

These tiny ornamental keys ‘to the College’ were given to members who contributed to the endowment fund for the College of Nursing headquarters. The foundation stone for the headquarters at 20 Cavendish Square was laid in 1922, but the building did not officially open until 1926 meaning that this year marks 100 years of opening.

This key was given to Miss Violet M Verity, about whom we know only from the memorandum that accompanies the key when she gave it back to the College in 1973. She paid a Guinea for it, which is roughly £1.05, but if we consider inflation then it could have cost up to around £150 today.
