A very hearty mazel tov to Leo Baeck College Alumna, Rabbi Debbie Young-Somers, on being appointed the first-ever woman Senior Rabbi of Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue - EHRS, or either of its predecessor congregations.

Recounting her journey to the rabbinate and her decision to apply to Leo Baeck College, Rabbi Debbie said:

“I had toyed with lots of different careers, from counselling to drama therapy, working in interfaith to being an RE teacher. After an amazing trip with Reform Jewish Students to Berlin, where I had a very spiritual experience, I realised that everything I had toyed with doing was wrapped up in the Rabbinate, and that I wanted to do something that would allow me to invest in and give back to the Jewish community that had added so much meaning, comfort and joy to my life. Those are still the things I aim to bring to others through this incredible role every day.

It was obvious to me that if I wanted to serve in and give to the British community that had nurtured and raised me, I wanted to be trained in the heart of it. I wanted to learn from other British rabbis, and to invest in the community that had made me who I am. I felt after my interview at Leo Baeck College that if the answer was no, it would be the right answer as the three day process felt really effective.

I was of course delighted that the answer was yes and I still feel incredibly privileged that I had the opportunity to study full time and immerse myself before being ready to serve our communities and movement and continuing to work on bringing meaning, comfort and joy into people's lives through their Judaism.”

As part of the 70th anniversary celebrations of Leo Baeck College’s founding, we have interviewed a number of people that played vital roles in the College’s history. On 29th October, we will bring you a short documentary film featuring these testimonies.

We have interviewed Michael Bogod z”l in June 2025 before his passing. Michael’s contribution to the Reform movement spanned over 70 years. He sat on Cardiff Reform Synagogue’s council since 1950 and his first involvement with the Cardiff Reform Synagogues came in 1949 when he oversaw the rebuild of the synagogue building.

Michael and his family supported the College for decades. As a member of Reform Synagogues of Great Britain (RSGB), Michael was instrumental in establishing the Leo Baeck College. In July 2024, Michael’s granddaughter Rabbi Daisy Bogod, was ordained by LBC. She is currently serving as a Rabbi at the Mosaic Synagogue.

“Today, we remember all those who lost their lives in the massacre on that black Shabbat/Simchat Torah. We also think of those who were torn from their families and loved ones, to unimaginable captivity - those who, against all odds, returned in life, and those who returned in death.

We think of the orphaned children, and the bereaved parents, of those living with physical scars, and those whose wounds cut deeper. We pray for them, and for us.” – 1st year rabbinical student, Gavriella Goldman.

“I was 11 years old when I decided to become a rabbi!

Looking back I think I was drawn to a role that centered learning and, even at that early age I already understood the importance of community. Many years later I decided I was finally ready to apply to Leo Baeck College and left my first career in human rights law. I pursued the rabbinate as an adult as I believed that it was a generative way to answer the sacred demand to pursue justice, always. I believed that communities were spaces that could be counter-cultural to the way society was structured, and rabbis could be teachers within communities to sustain value-led and ambitious, justice led communities.

During university, and for years after, I would print the brochure for Leo Baeck College and wonder whether that year would be the one that I would apply. For me, there was no other option but Leo Baeck College. I saw my rabbis who were alumni and inspired me, I met the teachers at the college through an open day and was attracted by the intellectual rigour and sense of community.

The interview process was demanding but also demonstrated the holistic mode of learning it employs and the quality of the teaching. LBC is the jewel in progressive Judaism and I’m proud to be an alum and teacher at the college as I continue to be inspired by the students and see the potential in the communities that will be created and nurtured by them.“ – Rabbi Robyn Ashworth-Steen, LBC Alumna, ordained in 2017.

“I had always known about Leo Baeck College growing up as the place where our Rabbis were trained. As a young Cheder teacher, LBC was where I got my training so really it was a no-brainer to go there when I decided to trainee for the Rabbinate.

I loved how LBC rabbinic training is immersed in real communities and that the teachers were and still are a combination of academics and practising Rabbis and Cantors.
