Yesterday, Acting High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the UK, Dr M. Nazrul Islam, met with Mr Edwin Poots MLA, Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, at Parliament Buildings, Stormont.

The meeting focused on strengthening parliamentary exchanges and cooperation, sharing experiences on governance systems, promoting academic exchanges among universities, and enhancing collaboration within the framework of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

Dr Nazrul Islam highlighted Bangladesh’s skilled and dynamic human capital, growing economic potential, and emerging opportunities for deeper engagement, encouraging a broader understanding of Bangladesh beyond the traditional development narrative.

The discussion also covered the welfare, interests and aspirations of the Bangladeshi community in Northern Ireland, with both sides underscoring the importance of continued engagement and people-to-people connections.

Yesterday, Acting High Commissioner Dr M Nazrul Islam met with Professor Margaret Topping, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement at Queen's University Belfast, a Russell Group university. They discussed practical cooperation with universities and research institutes in Bangladesh in agriculture, food security, biomedical sciences, engineering, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.

The Acting High Commissioner welcomed the presence of Bangladeshi students at Queen’s. Both sides agreed to explore direct partnerships with universities in Bangladesh, including transnational education, academic collaboration, greater mobility of students, faculty and researchers, researcher exchanges and future visits to Bangladeshi universities.

Acting High Commissioner Dr M Nazrul Islam met today with the Rt Hon Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly, and discussed strengthening cooperation in trade and investment, culture, creative industries and people-to-people exchanges. They also explored greater interaction between business communities and the prospect of a sister-city partnership between Belfast and Chattogram.

The Acting High Commissioner welcomed Belfast’s commitment to diversity, race harmony and strong community networks. Both sides agreed to maintain close contact so that the Bangladeshi community in Belfast can remain connected with the Council and access appropriate support when needed.

Highlighting the contributions of the well established Bangladeshi community in Northern Ireland, the Acting High Commissioner reaffirmed that the High Commission remains attentive to their concerns and committed to safeguarding their rights, dignity and access to appropriate services. Both sides also discussed closer cooperation between the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission and the National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh.

Yesterday, the Acting High Commissioner Dr M Nazrul Islam visited Belfast Harbour and discussed opportunities for cooperation in port management, trade facilitation, maritime connectivity and sustainable infrastructure. He was briefed on the Harbour’s strategic economic role, expansion plans and trust-port model.

Both sides expressed interest in knowledge-sharing and exchanges of visits, particularly on modern port management, and cruise tourism opening avenues for practical cooperation between Bangladesh and Northern Ireland.

Today, the Acting High Commissioner visited the RNLI Peel Lifeboat Station at the Isle of Man. During the visit, he met with the RNLI representatives including International Funding Manager, Neil Smith, and Bangladesh Programme Manager, Darren Williams.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the largest of the lifeboat services operating around the coasts of the UK, Ireland, and the Isle of Man.

Through this institute, the Island conducts its vital work on water safety and drowning prevention, in partnership with the RNLI and the Isle of Man Harbours and Coastguard. The RNLI supports lifesaving and drowning prevention work worldwide, including in Bangladesh. Their initiatives in cooperation with the Bangladesh Government and other stakeholders have helped reduce the risk of drowning significantly among the project participants in Bangaldesh.

Acting High Commissioner Dr M. Nazrul Islam met with the Hon Juan Watterson MLC, President of Tynwald, on 13 August 2026.

Tynwald, the Parliament of the Isle of Man, is recognised as the world’s oldest continuous parliamentary institution.

During the meeting, they exchanged views on parliamentary cooperation under the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and discussed other areas of mutual interest. Following the meeting, the President of Tynwald hosted Dr Islam on a tour of the Parliament, providing an opportunity to learn more about its history and work.

Today, Acting High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the United Kingdom, Dr. M. Nazrul Islam, met with the Hon’ble Chief Minister of the Isle of Man Government, H.E. Alfred Cannan.

They held productive discussions on deepening cooperation across a range of areas of mutual interest, with particular focus on climate action, disaster prevention, sustainable development, repatriation of Rohingya, cultural cooperation, capacity development for prevention of drowning, trade, business and investment, and cooperation on stolen asset recovery.
