The Fitzrovia Chapel Announces George Vasey as Curator in Residence 2027 and Three Solo Exhibitions
The Fitzrovia Chapel is delighted to announce the appointment of curator and writer as its Curator in Residence for 2027. He will curate three new commissions by Christian Ovonlen, Eileen Cooper and Aliaskar Abarkas, transforming the chapel in January, April and November 2027.
The programme opens in January with British artist Christian Ovonlen (b.1987), who brings an exhibition of new capes, textiles, and drawings celebrating the transformative, restorative power of soul and disco. In the depths of winter, Ovonlen will fill the chapel with warmth, light and colour, evoking the sounds, styles and gestures of the dance floor.
April brings celebrated British artist Eileen Cooper OBE RA (b. 1953), who presents new paintings shaped by conversations with NHS workers at University College London Hospital. Drawing on historic depictions of medical professionals, the work moves beyond the anonymised imagery so often used to represent caregiving, instead exploring the rich inner lives of the NHS's diverse community.
The year closes in November with London-based Iranian artist Aliaskar Abarkas (b.1994), whose new performance and installation explores breath and breathlessness through the concept of sighing, tracing its physical, sonic and lyrical dimensions. The piece draws together the chapel's historic architecture with contributions from a range of community collaborators.
