Hundreds of thousands of people with type 2 diabetes could benefit from a new weekly insulin injection after NICE recommended insulin efsitora alfa.

For some people, this could reduce the number of injections needed from 365 a year to just 52.

The treatment could make a real difference to those who rely on support to manage their insulin, including some frailer people, people with sight loss, limited hand movement, learning disabilities, or those who find the injection process difficult to follow.

Fewer injections could also mean fewer visits from carers or healthcare professionals and less disruption to day-to-day life.

Gavin talks about the heart failure device that remotely monitors his heart.

“I’ve got a new lease of life, and I’ve got to meet my grandson, which is the most precious gift of all.”

Gavin’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference healthtech can make when it reaches the people who need it most.

After living with heart problems for much of his life, Gavin joined a clinical trial using TriageHF technology to remotely monitor people with heart failure. The implanted device detected warning signs before Gavin had noticeable symptoms, prompting his clinical team to act quickly. That early intervention helped put him on the path to a heart transplant and, ultimately, a dramatically improved quality of life.

Importantly, the clinical trial Gavin took part in at Manchester was used by NICE to help develop its guidance on algorithm-based remote monitoring in people with cardiac implantable electronic devices.

A groundbreaking approach to monitoring heart failure patients remotely has reduced unnecessary hospital admissions by 58%, improving patient experience and saving the NHS £4,158 per patient.

Last year, 727 livers were donated in the UK after someone's heart stopped. Only 309 were transplanted.

A new procedure recommended in NICE draft guidance today could help close that gap, potentially enabling around 150 more transplants a year.

It works by keeping the donor liver supplied with oxygenated blood inside the body before removal, giving transplant teams the time and information they need to decide whether it's suitable.
