Reform spent a year presenting itself as Britain’s coming political force. New YouGov research suggests the public is increasingly seeing something very different.

Reform keeps insisting it is a broad church. The increasingly messy public row around Zia Yusuf is showing just how hard that is to sustain.

Senior figures are attacking each other, Farage is rebuking his own spokesman, and Tim Montgomerie has now been suspended.

Here’s how it got to this point.

Another Reform councillor, another shambles.

John Allen was elected for Reform in Northumberland, expelled after allegations he said he wanted to shoot Keir Starmer, then failed to attend a single council meeting for six months and has now lost his seat.

Reform keeps calling itself a government in waiting while struggling to keep control of its own councillors.

Reform elected Robert Hanson under its banner in May, gave him responsibility for Adult Health and Social Care in Sheffield, and only afterwards discovered he wasn’t actually a member of the party.

They say he was repeatedly asked to join and refused.

Another fairly basic question about how seriously Reform is vetting and managing the people it puts into public office.

Reform councillor Christine Duffy says she received “very little or no training” after being elected in May.

She then tried to resign by handing her letter to the wrong council.

For a party desperate to be taken seriously as a government-in-waiting, this is an extraordinary level of basic incompetence.

Farage has spent months trying to make Reform look like a government-in-waiting, even creating a self-styled “shadow cabinet” to give the party an air of authority it simply does not have. Behind that presentation, support has fallen sharply from its peak, election results have disappointed, and increasingly bitter rows are breaking out inside the party.

Tim Montgomerie has been suspended by Reform, and his response is extraordinary.

He says Nigel Farage has lost control of the party’s direction, accuses Zia Yusuf of turning politics into a constant war against “enemies”, and admits voters are increasingly organising tactically to stop Reform.

This is what a party coming apart at the seams looks like.

Reform’s welfare plan means 20 hours a week of compulsory council work for £30, with no employment rights and benefits removed indefinitely for refusing. Their own costing assumes half of it replaces jobs councils would otherwise pay someone to do.

Reform has a problem with women.

From Andrew Tate and abortion rights, to the Equality Act and the men Reform has chosen to defend, the evidence keeps stacking up.
