Ethiopia has called for faster progress on expanding electricity access and improving the affordability of climate finance, as Foreign Minister and COP32 President-Designate H.E. Gedion Timothewos addressed the Global Electrification Dialogue during London Climate Action Week.

The meeting, convened by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the COP31 Presidency of Tรผrkiye and Australia, brought together ministers, international organizations and energy experts focused on implementation of global climate goals.

The discussions centered on how to scale up clean electricity systems while delivering on existing climate commitments. A key proposal under consideration is a target to raise electrification to 35% of global final energy consumption by 2035. Dr. Gedion supported the objective, saying it could help translate climate pledges into concrete investments in power generation, transmission networks, grid expansion and clean cooking access.

He stressed that financing remains the main constraint for many developing economies. Even when renewable energy projects are viable, high borrowing costs often delay or prevent implementation. This, he said, reflects perceived risks related to currency volatility, political conditions and regulatory uncertainty. He called for stronger international risk-mitigation instruments, including guarantees, insurance mechanisms, and expanded access to local-currency financing.

The foreign minister also emphasized that electrification should be understood as more than a decarbonization tool. He said expanding access to reliable electricity is central to economic development, energy security and industrial growth, particularly in countries where energy access gaps remain significant.

The dialogue forms part of the preparatory process for COP31, where governments are expected to focus increasingly on implementation of existing commitments. Participants also exchanged views on energy security, renewable energy deployment and investment mobilization. Held during London Climate Action Week, the event served as an informal platform for shaping priorities ahead of the next round of UN climate negotiations.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has called on Ethiopians to build on the achievements of recent years and carry forward the spirit of national unity as the country works to translate reforms into lasting change.

Speaking at the Ethiopia Delivers national summit, held under the theme โ€œFrom Reform to Lasting Change,โ€ the Prime Minister reflected on the outcomes and impact of key reforms implemented over the past eight years.

He said Ethiopiaโ€™s progress, including the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, was the result of deliberate choices and collective effort, rooted in the spirit of Medemer. He noted that lasting change is achieved through coming together and working toward shared goals.

Emphasizing that reforms are a foundation for future generations, the Prime Minister said nation-building is a collective undertaking that extends beyond any single generation. He called on all Ethiopians to carry the spirit of reform forward, build on what has been achieved, and strive for even greater progress.

Ethiopia highlighted its economic reforms and investment potential at the UKโ€“Ethiopia Trade and Investment Forum in London, bringing together government officials, investors and business leaders from both countries. Opening the event, Ethiopian and UK officials stressed the importance of deepening trade and investment ties.

In a keynote address, Foreign Minister H.E. Dr. Gedion Timothewos said Ethiopia's ongoing economic reforms are creating a more competitive and investor-friendly business environment. He pointed to stronger economic performance, growing investor confidence and expanding opportunities for private sector participation.

The minister highlighted opportunities across key sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, mining, energy, infrastructure, finance, healthcare and technology. He also noted growing investment interest in Ethiopia and strengthening trade relations with the UK.

Representing the UK Government, Ben Ainsley, Acting HM Trade Commissioner for Africa, reaffirmed the UK's commitment to strengthening economic cooperation with Ethiopia. Ethiopiaโ€™s Ambassador to the UK, H.E. Biruk Mekonnen highlighted the opportunities created by Ethiopia's reform agenda and encouraged British investors to expand their engagement in the country.

Panel discussions explored opportunities in agribusiness, energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, mining, logistics and the digital economy. Among the speakers were H.E. Tesfahun Gobezay, State Minister of the Government Communication Service (GCS), and Prime Minister's Press Secretary Billene Seyoum, who highlighted reforms and opportunities in agribusiness and the digital economy. Participants emphasized Ethiopia's expanding market, reform programme and strategic position as a gateway to African markets.

Closing the forum's first day, H.E. Ambassador Lalisa Berhanu, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Ethiopian Embassy in London, said the event demonstrated the strength of Ethiopiaโ€“UK relations and reaffirmed Ethiopia's commitment to welcoming investors as partners in its development journey.

The second day focused on business to government engagement, with investors meeting Ethiopian officials and potential financiers to discuss large-scale projects in infrastructure, agriculture, irrigation, energy and industry. The discussions are expected to support future investment partnerships.

The two-day forum was co-organised by the Government of Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Embassy in London, HM Government and DMA Invest. It brought together representatives from development finance institutions, business associations, private companies and diplomatic missions, underscoring growing interest in Ethiopia's economic transformation and investment opportunities.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today announced the official inauguration of the Unified MESOB Application during the "Digital for Excellence" summit. The platform is Africa's first unified digital service application, bringing services from multiple institutions onto a single platform.

The Prime Minister said the launch is a source of national pride and reflects what can be achieved through deliberate and focused investment in technology. He added that the platform demonstrates Ethiopia's ability to turn its ambitions into practical realities through its own capacity.

According to the Prime Minister, the MESOB one-stop service serves as critical economic infrastructure by saving citizens' time, closing corruption gaps and strengthening institutional integrity across government institutions.

He also called for the achievement to be consolidated and shared with African countries, urging continued determination to deliver further progress through digital transformation.

MESOB is a one-stop government service platform that integrates services from multiple federal institutions to improve efficiency, reduce bureaucracy, enhance transparency and expand digital access to public services across Ethiopia.
