Talk of the return of two-party politics is for the birds.

In the 1950s heyday of the two-party system, over 9 in 10 voters backed Labour or the Tories.

By the 1970s, 8 in 10 votes still went to one or the other.

On current polling, Labour & the Tories combined would receive barely 5 in 10 votes.

Voters show no interest in a return to two-party voting. Multi-party politics is here to stay.

The question now is how much longer First Past the Post, a voting system built for two parties, can continue to survive.

If FPTP can’t deliver on its own terms, what exactly is the case for keeping it?

We get a hint in the clip why the Conservatives are sticking with FPTP. In a fragmented political landscape, First Past the Post leaves open the possibility of winning power on historically small shares of the vote.

The subtext is clear: for the Tories, a government supported by no more than 3 in 10 voters is a price worth paying if you think you might be the one forming it.

So even while admitting that politics itself has changed, they don't want the voting system to change with it.

An independent national commission, with strong citizen and expert participation, is the best way to put electoral reform above the immediate interests of the government - or any party - and to build consent and legitimacy for a lasting settlement.

Involving both the public and all parties in shaping reforms on how they vote will be crucial.

In its editorial, the FT has said electoral reform “could help to better align the UK’s anachronistic electoral model with an increasingly multi-party system.”

They’re right. First Past the Post was built for an era when two parties dominated. We no longer live in that world.

We need a new voting system fit for today’s multi-party politics.
