Winston Churchill was known to be an admirer of the French Adrian helmet.

He received an Adrian as a gift while commanding an infantry battalion on the Western Front. Of the helmet, he wrote home to his wife: 'My steel helmet is the cause of much envy. I look most martial in it – like a Cromwellian. I always intend to wear it under fire - but chiefly for the appearance'.

This was Churchill's underground bedroom during the Second World War.

While Churchill was fond of an afternoon nap, it's suspected he only actually slept overnight here maybe three times over the course of the war.

His bedroom was also advantageously placed next to the Map Room, Churchill's favourite place in the Cabinet War Rooms, which meant he could drop in at any time to catch any developments.

The Map Room at Churchill War Rooms remains frozen in time at 5pm on August 16th, 1945, the day after Japan's surrender.

These sugar cubes were perfectly preserved inside this room for decades!

The Map Room is considered to be the nerve centre of Britain's war effort during the Second World War. When the war ended in August 1945, this site was abandoned, becoming a perfect time capsule.

Decades later, curators from IWM uncovered a tiny treasure: three sugar cubes hidden in a desk drawer.

Churchill is cheered by workers during a visit to bomb damaged Plymouth on 2 May 1941. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Lady Nancy Astor, Lord Mayoress of Plymouth, and W. Averell Harriman, President Roosevelt's Special Envoy, on this visit. Both can be seen behind him.

Prime Minister Churchill reviews a civil service battalion of the Home Guard, largely drawn from Whitehall offices. Churchill also delivers a speech celebrating the men who are ready, at short notice, ‘to fight for home and hearth’.

Winston Churchill, as Minister of Munitions, watches the March Past of the 47th Division from the Grand Stand of the Grande Place at Lille, 28 October 1918.

In the second row, next to the French officer, is Millicent, Duchess of Sutherland, who ran a Red Cross hospital at Calais during the First World War. Standing next to her is her daughter, Lady Rosemary Leveson-Gower, who worked in her mother's hospital, and then Sir Edward "Eddie" Marsh, Private Secretary to Winston Churchill.
