Wandle Industrial Museum

The museum was founded in 1983. Its mission is to preserve, store, and interpret the heritage and history of the industries and people of the River Wandle.

This building in Carshalton is home to STR Design and Print and the Vellum Gallery. It is the oldest industrial building in Carshalton and was one of three mills at Butter Hill/Mill Lane.

Friday Pub Day. This is the William Morris Pub at Merton Abbey Mills. It is in the former Block Shop of the Liberty Print Works. Many people get confused because of the pub thinking this was the site of Morris Works. They were in fact on Merton High Street north of where Merton Abbey Mills is.

Thursday Postcard Day. This postcard shows Wey c1883 designed by William Morris which was printed on cotton. Named after the River Wey in Surrey the flowers are against a dark indigo background.

Great display from the Revive Wandle Roots project team at the Merton Heritage Discovery Day. They are growing plants that were used in the production of dyes used by the textile mills along the Wandle Valley. The use of natural dyes and bleaching of calico cloth was common until the 1860's when chemical dyes and bleaching was introduced. William Morris did revive the use of plants to produce natural dyes when he moved to Merton.
They have ran a number of workshops and hopefully will get funding to continue the project.

Thursday Postcard Day. This is a postcard of the 'Angeli Ministrantes' tapestry. The figures for this tapestry were originally drawn in 1877-1878 by Edward Burne-Jones for stained-glass lancet windows in the south choir of Salisbury Cathedral, which were made in the Morris & Co. workshops. In 1894 Burne-Jones's cartoons were converted to tapestry with the addition of background and border designs by John Henry Dearle.

Wednesday Archive Day. This photo from our archive shows Carew Manor in Beddington. Home for many years to the Carew family who owned mills on the Wandle. It was also the meeting place on many occasions of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.
