The Rohingya are a Muslim ethnic minority living in northern Arakan/Rakhine State in western Burma. There are approximately 1.33 million Rohingya in Burma, but the country's 1982 Citizenship Law denies them citizenship in spite of the fact that Rohingya have lived in Burma for generations. What has been happening in Burma? Rohingya Muslims have faced severe persecution and violence at the hands of
the state and Bhuddist extremists for decades. Burmese President Thein Sein outright denies the existence of the Rohingya as an ethnic group of Burma, calling them "Bengali" instead. Labeling them Rohingya "Bengali" is a discriminatory, xenophobic way of erroneously implying that Rohingya do not belong in Burma and that they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Current Situation
Since 2010 Bhuddist mobs in Arakan and Rakhine helped by Burmese security forces, are responsible for the slaughter of thousands of Rohingya Muslims. A UN report confirms the gruesome deaths of men, women and children – severed heads, burnt and mutilated bodies of hundreds of Rohngya Muslims. Bhuddist extremists continue to kill with impunity and the
western media refuse to give coverage. What can people in UK do to help? You can write or speak to your MP, try to persuade your MP to write to our Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary. Organise gatherings to make the public aware of Rohingya plight. Write to media organisations demanding coverage is given to the genocide against Rohingya. There are many charities now raising money for the Rohingya, please contact RSC if unsure which charity to use. Please sign the petition which you will find on our page. What should the media and UK government do to help the Rohingya people? The British Government must immediately start working with European partners and members of UN Security Council to ensure there is strong pressure on the Burmese government to stop the genocide against Rohingya Muslims. The UN has so far failed the Rohingya people, we believe the UK Government can take the lead in the UN Security Council to work with other nations to prevent further mass killings of Rohingya Muslims. Action taken by international community so far
The international community has called on the Burmese government to commission an independent investigation, but Burmese Presidential Spokesman Ye Htut rebuked the UN for calling for an investigation. We the RSC believe the international community should be doing more to stop the genocide in Burma. Rohingya Solidarity Campaign
