🎤 Takura Makoni is Policy Officer with Acsoni Northern Ireland.
An activist and community leader, Takura combines bold action with unwavering dedication to challenging racism and supporting the most vulnerable in our society. In 2025 he was named Anti-Racist Leader of the Year at the Advancing Race Equality Awards.

🎤 Paul Noonan is a Senior Policy Manager in the Policy and Research Team at the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland. Before joining the Commission in 2003, he spent almost 20 years working in the voluntary sector with the Irish Traveller community, including roles with Navan Travellers Committee, Save the Children Fund, the Northern Ireland Council for Travelling People and Belfast Travellers Education and Development Group.

🎤 Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri is a leading Irish Muslim religious and social thinker and commentator. A qualified theologian and jurist, he works for cohesion, integration and a fairer society from his positions as Chairperson of the Irish Muslim Peace and Integration Council and Chief Imam at the Islamic Centre of Ireland based in West Dublin.

🎤 Our keynote speaker: Keith Fraser

Keith is a nationally respected thought leader in policing, youth justice and inclusive public leadership across England and Wales.

As Chair of the Youth Justice Board, a member of the Criminal Justice Board, and a former UK Commissioner on Race and Ethnic Disparities, Keith has played a significant role in shaping national policy and governance.

His experience also extends to regional and operational leadership, including senior roles with West Midlands Police and the Metropolitan Police Service.

We’re looking forward to hearing Keith’s insights on how we can move from commitment to action and create public institutions where everyone feels heard, valued and included. 🤝🏾

LURGAN LEARNING...We were back in St Ronan's College Lurgan yesterday for arguably our busiest ever day of school workshops.

Bashir and Beverly spoke to well over 100 students, teaching them about Black history and Black History Month. The young people were so engaged, asking questions and just generally being curious about an element of the past that isn't always front and centre of the curriculum.

As for ourselves, there is a lot more to come as we continue to roll out our school workshops and activities 📚 💪

CAFÉ CULTURE...Our Black History Month programme will culminate with the official opening of The People’s Café, a permanent intercultural community space for people to meet, eat, learn, share cultures, access support and build relationships.

The evening will include a discussion exploring food as intangible cultural heritage and its connection to culture, identity, acceptance and belonging.

Rather than ending Black History Month with a one-off celebration, we want to end it by opening a door – creating a lasting space where the conversations, relationships and sense of belonging developed throughout October can continue throughout the year.
