Long Itchington BookHub: Special Children’s Book Sale

The Long Itchington BookHub second-hand bookshop & lending library, based at Holy Trinity Church on Church Road, will be open for an extra children’s book sale on Wednesday 5th August from 12 noon to 4pm. We have had several excellent children's book donations from generous villagers over the last few weeks, but we haven't got enough shelf space for them all – so please come and pick up some bargains to keep the kids entertained over the summer holidays. To mark the occasion, you can buy any 2 children’s books and get 1 free!

We have a wide range of titles, from board books for babies and toddlers, through to large format hardback and paperback picture books, early reader collections, pre-teen and teenage fiction, plus some young adult and fantasy fiction, so there’s something suitable for all ages. Special boxed collections include titles by Jill Murphy (the Worst Witch series), Dick-King Smith and Michael Morpurgo.

And while the kids are browsing their shelves and baskets of books, there’s the usual selection of paperback and hardback adult fiction and non-fiction on offer, plus the odd jigsaw. Put the date in your diary – we’d love to see you there 😊.

Parish Council Planning Meeting - Monday 3rd August, 7.00pm

The parish council will be discussing the planning application 26/01398/OUT at a Planning Meeting at the Community Centre. The PC will be agreeing its formal response to the proposal. This application concerns the outline proposal for 100 residential dwellings on Land West of Southam Road (south of Leather Street) Residents will have the opportunity to speak during the Public Forum.

We urge everyone who has contact with young people to warn them of the very real dangers of lighting fires. This warning follows several reports from residents who have seen young people lighting fires in play areas, at Green End, LILAC field, by the river and in wooded areas. We ask parents and carers to speak with youngsters about the serious consequences of lighting fires.

If you see such an incident, call 999 for the Fire Brigade. You can also report to 101. For further advice please contact the parish council.

With dry weather, wildfire risk is high. Help protect our open spaces:

Fully extinguish ci******es and matches
Take all litter home (especially glass)
We discourage the use of disposable BBQ’s but if you are using one keep them off dry grass and vegetation and dispose of ashes safely only when completely cold.
If you discover a fire, call 999 immediately.

UPDATE ON RECENT ISSUES AT THE GREEN

The Parish Council is aware of the current unauthorised occupation of the village green by a person in a caravan, and we understand that it has generated discussion within our community.

The Parish Council has formally requested (in writing) that the individual currently occupying the village green vacate the site. This request has been made because the Green is public land and unauthorised occupation is not permitted. The Council has a duty to ensure that public spaces remain available for everyone to enjoy and are not used in such a way as to prevent residents' enjoyment. We are also alarmed by the setting of fires. We have a duty to manage this land fairly and consistently for the benefit of all.

Should the site not be vacated voluntarily, the Parish Council will be considering the appropriate legal steps available to secure possession of the land. While we hope this can be resolved promptly and amicably, we are prepared to take formal action if necessary.

Whilst we appreciate that there are different views regarding travellers, we would advise that engagement with such activities as pony trap rides which are being offered can serve to prolong illegal encampment. This is an unauthorised commercial activity taking place from Parish Council land. This means that there are potential safety, insurance and liability considerations and the Council is unable to oversee or ensure residents' safety. Supporting this business may also inadvertently encourage the continued occupation of the site, making it more difficult resolve the situation.

We are also very concerned about the nuisance this encampment is causing to nearby residents.

Regarding the pony tethered at Green End - we are taking steps to remove the animal from a place where residents, including small children, are encouraged to walk and play.

We appreciate that this is a sensitive matter and ask that everyone remains respectful toward those involved and towards one another. The Parish Council is working with the appropriate authorities and the individual concerned to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. There are procedures we have to follow.

Unfortunately, as many people are aware, the children's play park at Leigh Crescent has been subjected to vandalism. There has been considerable damage caused by the widespread application of paint to the equipment. The area will be closed while we seek professional advice on the safest and most effective way to clean and restore all the equipment, if this is even possible. The park is near a stream therefore we are very mindful of preventing toxins getting into the water.

We would like to thank the parent who came forward with vital information on what happened and who was involved. We would also like to thank the resident who had photographic evidence. One offer of help to try and remedy the situation has been received from a young person. The police have been provided with the details of all the children who were involved, and we will now leave the investigation with them.

It is certainly possible that the cost of repairs might be considerable and, therefore, we cannot promise that the park will be re-opened quickly in that vicinity. We are very sorry we cannot give a more definitive response at this stage.

We wish to re-iterate that if any resident sees a crime being committed the best and quickest form of action is to dial 999.

We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding while we work with the police regarding the investigation as well as making a careful assessment of the best course of action.

Yesterday the play area at Leigh Crescent was vandalised. If anyone has knowledge of who was involved or pictures showing the incident please send them to the Parish Council. We have reported it to the Police. We do have reliable information about possible culprits which we are forwarding to the Police. If you have recently had any pale blue paint stolen from a garage or out-building, please let us know, and if so, please ask neighbours to check doorbell cameras. All information is useful.
