🌼 Deaf Awareness Week 🌼

This week is all about understanding, inclusion, and better communication. Small changes — like speaking clearly, reducing background noise, or learning a little BSL — can make a big difference.

Let’s celebrate Deaf culture, raise awareness, and help create communities where everyone feels included and heard. 💙

Parents of Cam and Dursley GL11 Community Hub

🌼 Deaf Awareness Week: Understanding, Inclusion, and Better Communication
Deaf Awareness Week is an annual campaign that encourages everyone to learn more about Deaf culture, communication barriers, and the simple steps we can take to make the world more accessible. It highlights the experiences of Deaf people, celebrates British Sign Language (BSL), and reminds us that small changes in how we communicate can make a big difference.

💡 Why it matters
Over 12 million people in the UK have some level of hearing loss.

Many face daily challenges that others may not notice — background noise, unclear speech, or environments that aren’t designed with accessibility in mind.

Awareness helps us build workplaces and communities where everyone feels included and understood.

🤝 How we can support Deaf awareness
Use clear communication — face the person, speak naturally, and don’t cover your mouth.

Reduce background noise when possible.

Learn basic BSL signs — even a few greetings can make someone feel welcome.

Be patient and flexible — everyone communicates differently.

Check understanding rather than repeating louder.

🌟 This week encourages us to:
Celebrate Deaf culture and identity

Promote equal access to services

Challenge assumptions about hearing loss

Support colleagues, patients, and friends who communicate differently

💬 A simple message to share
“Deaf Awareness Week reminds us that communication belongs to all of us. By being mindful, inclusive, and open to learning, we create spaces where everyone can be heard — in every sense of the word.”

Quick update 🗳️

There are no elections taking place in Stroud District in May 2026, and no by-elections are currently planned.

District Council elections happen every four years, with the last ones being held in 2024. You might see elections happening elsewhere in 2026—this is just because different areas follow different election cycles.

We’re also waiting on the Government to confirm future plans for local councils in Gloucestershire. A decision is expected this summer, with possible elections for new “shadow authorities” in May 2027.

In the meantime, it’s a good idea to check you’re registered to vote, or sign up for a postal or proxy vote so you’re ready when the time comes!

For more info, head to the Stroud District Council website.

📢 Vacancy on Cam Parish Council – Cam West Ward!

A seat has become available on the Parish Council, which means there’s an opportunity for local residents to step up and help shape the future of our community.

If enough residents request it, an election will be held. If not, the council will fill the role by co-option.

👉 Interested in making a difference in Cam?We’d love to hear from you!
