West Mercia Police are continuing to advise the public to look out for elderly or vulnerable family and friends following a spate of courier fraud incidents.

This includes an incident in Hereford yesterday (28 August) where an elderly victim was pressured to withdraw money from his bank and hand it over to a courier, as well as being pressured to buy high value items and to transfer a large amount of money to another account.

A further incident was reported in North Herefordshire recently where another elderly victim was pressured by a fraudster claiming to be a police officer to transfer a significant amount of money to another account. This is in addition to several other reports in Herefordshire and Worcestershire in recent weeks.

Courier fraud is usually when a fraudster phones their victim and claims to be from the police or another law enforcement authority or the bank.

They dupe them into revealing their PIN and credit or debit card details or ask them to hand over cash or to buy high value items which they then advise them to hand over to a ‘courier’.

Sadly, the most common victims of courier fraud are elderly people.

Detective Inspector Mel Reynolds said: “Please continue to remain vigilant around courier fraud and look out for vulnerable family or friends who are more at risk of falling victim to these con artists. Make sure they are aware of this scam.

“Always remember, no police officer from any force will ever ask you to make a payment or purchase, withdraw or transfer money or ask for your bank details.

“In recent incidents fraudsters have claimed to be the ‘Chief Police Officer of Hereford’ or that they are from the MET police.

“If you have a call like this, put the phone down and call the police or your bank from another landline or mobile to check, not the one you were called on.”

Incidents like these are being tackled by West Mercia Police as part of Operation Prospero, which directly targets offenders posing as police officers, working in conjunction with Report Fraud .

📍 South Shropshire Safer Neighbourhood Team Activity Update
Officers from the South Shropshire Safer Neighbourhood Team have recently carried out a number of proactive policing activities across the area, including targeted patrols, the ex*****on of a drugs warrant, and enforcement activity aimed at tackling local concerns and keeping our communities safe.

✅ Results from recent activity:
• 1 drugs warrant executed as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt drug-related crime
• 1 person dealt with for possession of a Class A drug, with drugs seized
• 1 Traffic Offence Report (TOR) issued for the illegal use of an e-bike

What do we want the public to know?
These activities form part of our ongoing commitment to tackling crime, reducing anti-social behaviour, and addressing the concerns raised by our communities. The ex*****on of drugs warrants and proactive patrols help us disrupt criminal activity, remove drugs from our streets and take positive action against those involved in offending. Road safety enforcement also helps ensure that all road users are acting responsibly and within the law.

We want residents to feel reassured that local officers are actively addressing community concerns, targeting criminality, and taking positive action to keep South Shropshire a safe place to live, work and visit.

🚔 Ludlow officers arrest high-risk domestic abuse suspect

Officers in Ludlow have today located and arrested a high-risk domestic abuse suspect who had been actively avoiding police.
Tackling domestic abuse remains a key policing priority. By identifying, locating and arresting those suspected of causing harm, we work to safeguard victims, reduce risk and hold offenders to account. This activity supports the national NPCC focus on protecting vulnerable people and preventing violence against women and girls.

We want our communities to feel reassured that we take reports of domestic abuse seriously and that officers will continue to pursue individuals who pose a risk to others.

Are you expecting a ticket in the post?

Whilst dealing with a road traffic collision yesterday, officers witnessed and identified seven drivers using a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving past the incident.

It's disappointing that, despite the presence of emergency services and an active collision incident, some motorists still choose to use a hand-held device whilst driving. Driver distraction puts lives at risk and can have devastating consequences. The offence is covered by Regulation 110 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, which prohibits the use of a hand-held mobile phone or hand-held device whilst driving.

The current penalties for using a hand-held mobile phone or other hand-held device whilst driving are:
£200 Fixed Penalty Notice
6 penalty points on your driving licence - Drivers who passed their test within the last 2 years will have their licence revoked if they receive the 6 points from this offence

Those identified can expect to hear from us in due course.
