The Marches team manage 42 woodlands from Shawbury in Shropshire to Leominster in North Herefordshire. Many of these are productive woodlands providing timber for wood products, fuel and firewood. The Public are welcome to walk in all our woodlands and it is possible to cycle and horse ride in some of them.

⚠ Increased wildfire risk ⚠

The UK's third heatwave is increasing the risk of wildfires. The Fire Severity Index is currently 'very high' for Shropshire and Herefordshire, and the Natural Hazards Partnership have issued a red-level wildfire warning.

Hot, dry weather means it only takes one small spark to start a fire that can spread rapidly, putting people, homes and wildlife at risk.

You can help prevent wildfires by:

🧺 Having a picnic and not using disposable barbecues
🚯 Taking all litter home, especially glass bottles
🚭 Making sure ci******es are fully extinguished
🚨 Calling 999 immediately if you spot a wildfire

Although the temperature is finally starting to drop a little, there is still an elevated risk of wildfires 🔥

It might be tempting to bring a disposable BBQ when your visiting woodlands over the weekend, but we can't stress enough how vital it is that you leave the BBQ at home!

🚫 Never light a fire or BBQ in our forests
🚭 Make sure any ci******es are put out and disposed of properly
🚒 If you discover a wildfire, get to a safe place and call 999

And finally we ask that you keep barriers and gateways clear at all times. Ask yourself could a fire engine or ambulance get through in case of emergency.

We just love this beautiful new bench at Haugh Woods near Hereford.

It celebrates the wonderful variety of species that we have thriving in our woodlands.

Positioned looking out over the Plantlife nature reserve at Joan’s Hill Farm meadow, it offers a welcome rest for visitors walking the Butterfly Trail.

A joint collaboration with the Wye Valley National Landscape, funded by the UK Government to improve access to nature. The bench sits alongside one of our all ability paths in Haugh Woods.

The amazing artist, Ant Beetlestone designed and carved this sensory bench in a way that engages the senses and promotes relaxation.

We love the cycle of forestry ❤️🌲

After trees are felled, more light hits the forest floor and it’s not long before new habitats emerge above the ground. One of our favourite sights is the foxgloves that often spring up in the years that follow harvesting.

This beautiful cluster is a treat for the eyes and the bees in Mortimer Forest’s Hazel Coppice.

Happy Volunteer’s Week!🥳

Did you know in Mortimer Forest we are supported by fantastic volunteers from Friends of Mortimer Forest?

They join us every month, whether we’re keeping the Easy Access Trail clear of nettles, or beating back the bracken to improve habitats for butterflies and moths, come rain or shine, they turn out to lend a hand.

Here we are working together this winter, to plant over 1600 hedgerow plants at Haye Park Meadow beside Climbing Jack Common (home of the bluebells).

Filling in the gaps will restore the hedgerow and create a network for nature that will connect different parts of the forest, improving biodiversity.

A huge thank you to our volunteers from Friends of Mortimer Forest and to all the amazing volunteers who help care for the nation’s forests.

Please do not light fires in the forest🔥

Someone thought it was a good idea to light this fire and didn’t put it out properly. The fire spread underground and popped up a short distance away where it continued to burn unattended.

Our forests are vulnerable to fires, both above ground and beneath the surface. They can spread quickly, putting people and wildlife at risk.

Never light a fire or BBQ in our forests. Make sure any ci******es are put out and disposed of properly. If you discover a wildfire, get to a safe place and call 999.

Our Woods for Wood White project at Bury Ditches has come to an end, and it's been a year to celebrate 🦋

Working with Butterfly Conservation and funded by the Shropshire Hills National Landscape Conservation Fund, we've been restoring vital habitat for the wood white butterfly, one of the UK's most threatened species.

Over the past year, we've cleared more than 5,900 square metres of overgrown vegetation, reopening sunny ride-side habitat and encouraging wildflowers like bird's-foot trefoil and meadow vetchling to flourish. This gives this rare butterfly the best possible chance to thrive.

With wood whites now being recorded at new sites in Wales, the future is looking brighter for this beautiful species, and a reminder of what careful woodland management can achieve 🌿
