STATEMENT ON RACIST ATTACK IN PORTADOWN
It is deeply disturbing that in this context of widespread violence against migrants and people of colour, a group of racist thugs have driven a family from their home in Portadown yesterday. Given the recent riots and pogroms in Ballymena and indeed Portadown itself, we must address and confront the fact that racism is spreading like wildfire in our communities.
This is a sickening attempt to intimidate people who play a valued role in our society, and we offer our unwavering support and solidarity to the family during this time.
A toxic and violent atmosphere is being whipped-up across Ireland, scapegoating those who weren't born here and those of different skin colour, blaming them for the failings of a capitalist system that is not providing for us. Let us remember that the latest census shows that the north of Ireland is 97% white - if every migrant was deported tomorrow you would still be broke, unable to access healthcare, extorted for your rent or unable to buy a home. You would still be exploited by an uncaring system that's past it's sell-by date.
Our common enemy is those who stoke up racist tensions to distract from the fact that we are being robbed blind in a time of truly obscene wealth hoarding by the ruling class.
Migrant effigies burnt, racist mobilisations north and south (egged on by British fascists like Tommy Robinson), and increased hate crimes against innocent families.
This is what we must come together to fight back against. Punch up, not down. We are stronger together and must rise above any attempts to divide us.
