STATEMENT FROM LUTON LABOUR GROUP FOLLOWING TRAIN COLLISION

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the driver who died in the tragic collision near Bedford and with the many passengers injured in the accident, following the crash between the two trains in Bedford yesterday.

On behalf of the council, I would like to thank the emergency services who responded so quickly to help those on board and are still at the scene.

I’d also like to pay tribute to our NHS who are working tirelessly to save the lives of those who are in a critical state and those injured.

A major incident has been declared, and officers are continuing to respond at the scene alongside colleagues from British Transport Police, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue, and the East of England Ambulance Service.

We understand that this will be a very difficult time for the families and friends of those affected and once more would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to all of them.

What a fantastic atmosphere in Luton this evening, welcoming Myles Smith back to his hometown, there’s something really powerful about seeing a homegrown artist come back and perform for the community that supported them from the very beginning.

This is exactly the kind of atmosphere our Labour council want to create more of, - vibrant, welcoming and full of life. Today is just one part of a much bigger programme. We’ve got a packed calendar of events, from cultural festivals to community activities, all designed to bring people into the town centre, support local businesses, and showcase everything Luton has to offer.

This Labour government is banning social media for Under-16s, the Prime Minister has announced today.

Keir Starmer says social media is making children unhappy, making it easier for bullies to abuse children, and is "designed to be addictive"

As a Labour council, alongside Luton rising, we are delighted to be organising Party in the Park, one of the biggest celebrations in the town's recent history, bringing together music, culture, local talent, community groups and residents current and former for a once-in-a-generation event celebrating the people, stories and communities that have shaped Luton over the past century and a half.

One of Britain's most celebrated live bands, Kaiser Chiefs, will headline a landmark community celebration in Stockwood Park as Luton prepares to mark 150 years since becoming a borough.
