Throughout August, the Gloucestershire Road Safety Partnership is delivering a countywide Rural Roads Safety Campaign.
Rural roads account for a disproportionate number of serious and fatal collisions across Gloucestershire. Many incidents involve road users travelling on familiar routes where complacency can develop over time, leading to increased risk-taking, inappropriate speeds and reduced concentration. Motorcyclists are also particularly vulnerable and continue to be overrepresented in serious injury collisions on rural roads.
The campaign aims to encourage safer behaviour by:
• Raising awareness of the risks associated with driving and riding on rural roads.
• Challenging complacency linked to familiar routes.
• Encouraging drivers and motorcyclists to choose safe and appropriate speeds.
• Supporting opportunities for engagement, education and enforcement activity.
• Reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our rural roads.

We have received an update regarding the ongoing ground stabilisation works on Forest Road, Lydney.

Following recent ground surveys, additional areas of instability were identified within the project area. To prevent future disruption and avoid having to reopen the site later, the decision has been made to complete all required stabilisation works under a single, coordinated programme.

The project is now anticipated to be completed in Summer 2027 (subject to ground conditions and ongoing progress).

Undertaking all necessary works now ensures long-term ground stability for Forest Road and avoids repeated road closures in the future.

For full details, project updates, and FAQs regarding the extended schedule, please visit the official project page here: https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/major-projects-list/geotechnical-and-structural/forest-road-lydney/

We'll once again be taking part in the Severn Estuary Big Beach Clean, collecting litter from Beachley Point and Lydney Harbour on Friday, 18 September 2026 and we'd love for you to join us!

This is a fantastic way to get outside in the fresh air, socialise with others, and help clean up the local area.

We will be litter picking at:

➡️Beachley Point in the morning from 9:30am to 12:30pm

➡️Lydney Harbour in the afternoon from 1:30pm to 4:30pm

A small amount of litter picking equipment will be provided so we do ask that you email first to register your interest or bring your own picker on the day.

The weather may not be as nice as it has been so we do recommend checking the forecast and ensure you're dressed for the weather on the day.

You can join us for either the morning or afternoon litter picks, or both.

Both sites can be found using the what3words below:

Lydney Harbour: ///humans.solutions.unit

If you'd like to volunteer, please contact the Sustainable Economy Team at: [email protected]
