Lynton & Lynmouth were “discovered” in the first decade of the 19th century when the Napoleonic Wars closed the Continent to travellers. Unable to make their Grand Tours of Europe due to the conflict visitors to Lynton & Lynmouth and the Lyn Valley area christened it “Little Switzerland” as it was reminiscent and evocative of their sojourns through the Alps en route to Italy. It’s spectacular beauty inspired famous literary figures such as Wordsworth, Coleridge Blackmore and Shelley, and years later Lynmouth was the scene of a devastating flood in 1952. Set in the heart of Exmoor, these twin towns are the perfect base to start your exploration of some of the most stunning scenery in Britain. Find Lynton & Lynmouth on the north coast of Devon in Exmoor National Park on the A39 between Minehead and Barnstaple.

🥾 Walk of the Month – Simonsbath to Lynmouth (Two Moors Way 50th Anniversary Walk) 🌿🎉

This June, we’re celebrating 50 years of the Two Moors Way by highlighting one of the most spectacular sections of the entire route — the final stage from Simonsbath to Lynmouth.

Crossing some of Exmoor’s most remote and dramatic landscapes, this unforgettable walk takes you through wild open moorland, past the source of the River Exe, historic Hoar Oak Cottage and along breathtaking valleys before arriving at the sea in Lynmouth. It’s a fitting finale to one of Devon’s most iconic long-distance trails.

🌿 What to expect:
• Vast open moorland across the remote Chains of Exmoor
• The source of the River Exe in Exmoor’s wild heartland
• Historic landmarks including Hoar Oak Cottage
• Stunning views across the East Lyn Valley
• A dramatic descent towards Lynmouth and the North Devon coast
• A true sense of adventure and wilderness

📏 Distance: Approximately 12 miles (19 km)

🎉 2026 marks 50 years of the Two Moors Way, officially opened in 1976 and connecting Dartmoor and Exmoor on one of England’s great long-distance walking routes.

The final section crosses Exmoor’s remotest country before descending through the steep-sided East Lyn Valley, with unforgettable views as the river tumbles towards the sea at Lynmouth.

From 7th – 21st June, families, visitors and locals can take part in the brand new Lynton & Lynmouth Family Car Trail.

Businesses across Lynton & Lynmouth will be displaying a famous car picture or model in their window, creating a fun challenge for all ages while exploring the villages.

Selected locations will also feature letters to collect. Find them all, work out the secret word, and enter our prize draw!

The trail has been created to encourage visitors to explore more of Lynton & Lynmouth, discover fantastic local businesses, and enjoy even more of what our villages have to offer.
