On Sunday: nothing political. On Monday: a terrorism investigation.

Ann Widdecombe was attacked in her own home last Wednesday. 78 years old. Four decades of public service.

Almost immediately, we were told there was nothing to suggest this was political or terror-related. Police said it again at a press conference on Sunday.

By Monday afternoon, counter-terrorism police had taken over the whole investigation and the man in custody had been re-arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences.

I don't understand how anyone could rule out a political motive within days of her body being found. Before there was even an arrest. You can't. Nobody can. The honest answer at that stage was "we don't know yet." That's all anyone needed to hear.

Instead, the public got reassurance that had to be reversed inside a week. And those early statements are what set the tone of the coverage most people saw.

To be clear, I'm not going to say anything about the man who's been arrested. He hasn't been charged. If he is, his motive gets decided by a jury, not by me and not by Facebook. Ann deserves a fair trial and a safe conviction, and nothing is worth putting that at risk.

But somebody made the decision to tell the country there was nothing to see. I'd like to know who and what evidence they had for saying it.

Two MPs murdered in a decade. Now this. People in public life deserve honesty about the risks, not comfortable statements that fall apart in days.

Ann deserved better. She still does.

🤝 300+ businesses signed up to the Responsible Retailer Scheme I launched in November.

Illegal traders undercut honest businesses. They dodge tax. They put dangerous products in the hands of our kids.

In this heatwave I keep seeing the same thing.

Solar panels spreading across our green fields.

They don't need to be there.

Car parks. Warehouse roofs. Industrial units. All sitting EMPTY.

Put the panels THERE.

France already forces solar canopies on big car parks. By law.

I'm not against solar. I'm against putting it in the wrong place.

Once farmland is gone, it's gone.

Food security IS national security.

STOP THE BOATS ⛵

12,000 illegal crossings in six months. Labour calls it a win.

That's where the bar is now. Not zero. Just "fewer".

197,000 since 2018. A city the size of York. Only 4% ever sent back.

The rest? Hotels. Handouts. Legal aid. A £15 BILLION asylum bill landing on YOU.

Fewer is not zero. "Better than last year" is not border control.

Reform will stop the boats. Not slow them. STOP them.

Now count the banks. The pubs. The butchers. The shops your parents used.

Something has changed. And it’s not just online shopping.

Footfall is down, banks and pubs are closing, yet barbershops, v**e shops and nail bars keep opening. The NCA's own findings explain why.
