How would scientists verify and responsibly announce a potential detection of extraterrestrial intelligence? 🛸

Professor Michael Garrett, the Sir Bernard Lovell Chair of Astrophysics, chaired a global effort to update the long-standing “post-detection protocols” used by researchers involved in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI).

The revised Declaration of Principles marks the first major update to the protocols in more than 15 years and, acknowledging that any credible detection of extraterrestrial technology would be a transformative event for humanity, establishes a rigorous framework for verification, transparency, and global risk communication.

On Christmas Day 2003, Beagle 2 touched down on Mars only to fall silent and be presumed lost for over a decade... The mission? To search for evidence of life.

It wasn’t until January 2015 that NASA imagery confirmed the spacecraft had landed safely and precisely on target, its silence likely caused by a single solar panel failing to fully deploy.

Jodrell is proud to be one of thirteen locations selected to receive a commemorative plaque telling the story of Beagle 2, recognising the Lovell Telescope’s integral role in the efforts to detect signals from the spacecraft.
