We live in a time when many of the basic needs of our citizens are no longer being met.

People struggle to get a GP appointment. Roads are crumbling. Town centres are declining. Local services are being cut. Families are paying more and receiving less.

At the same time, communities are expected to absorb levels of immigration they were never consulted on and never properly prepared for. The pressure on housing, schools, healthcare and local infrastructure continues to grow.

Meanwhile, after decades of political failure from the establishment parties, even our Armed Forces have been hollowed out to the point where serious questions are being asked about our military readiness and capabilities.

The first duty of any government is to look after its own people, secure its borders, provide essential services and ensure the nation can defend itself.

Macclesfield deserves better. Britain deserves better. This simply, isn't good enough

SHOULD BRITAIN HAVE A POPULATION CAP?

This weekend, Swiss voters will have the opportunity to decide whether to cap their country's population at 10 million people.

Supporters argue that rapid population growth is placing unsustainable pressure on housing, public services, transport infrastructure and the environment. Switzerland's population has grown from 7.3 million in 2002 to over 9.1 million today, with many citizens expressing concerns about overcrowding, rising housing costs and increasing pressure on healthcare.

Reform UK Macclesfield believes Britain must have an honest conversation about population growth and its impact on our communities.

The UK population has risen by millions over the past two decades, while millions of people struggle to find affordable housing, secure GP appointments, access NHS treatment, or find places in local schools.

Reform UK Macclesfield believe that the UK needs to establish a long-term population strategy that puts the interests of British citizens first. Immigration levels should be linked to housing supply, infrastructure capacity, public services and economic need—not ideological targets or open-ended commitments.

Britain's future should be determined by what our country can sustainably support. Growth must benefit existing communities, not overwhelm them.

What Could Macclesfield Look Like?

For the past week we've been asking questions about Cheshire East and whether the promises made in 2009 have actually been delivered.

Today we'd like to ask a different question.

What could Macclesfield look like if more decisions were made in Macclesfield?

Imagine a Town Hall brought back to life as the centre of local decision-making. Imagine 250 to 300 well-paid jobs based in the heart of the town. Hundreds of people coming into Macclesfield every day to work, shop, use local cafés and support local businesses.

Imagine local priorities being decided by people whose focus is Macclesfield and the surrounding communities rather than a council responsible for more than 420,000 residents across dozens of towns and villages.

We're not claiming there are easy answers. We are saying there is nothing wrong with asking whether local democracy could work better.

For seventeen years we've been told bigger is better.

Perhaps it's time to ask whether local is better.

If you thought council services were already struggling, things could be about to get significantly worse.

News reaches us at Reform Reform UK Macclesfield that Cheshire East Council is currently consulting on proposals that would see around 40% of call handler roles cut, with affected staff facing redundancy.

For many residents, the contact centre is the first point of contact when reporting issues, seeking advice, making enquiries, or accessing vital council services. Fewer staff inevitably means longer waiting times, greater frustration, and reduced support for those who need help.

At a time when residents are already paying more and expecting better, yet another reduction in frontline services raises serious questions about priorities and the long-term sustainability of council services.

The people of Cheshire East deserve a council that is responsive, accessible and accountable. Cutting large numbers of frontline staff risks taking us further away from that goal.

Cheshire East: A Failed Experiment?

Let's be clear. This isn't about attacking individuals.

It's about asking whether the system itself is working.

A council created without a public vote.

Years of financial difficulties.

Concerns raised by independent reviewers.

Communities feeling disconnected from decision making.

If Cheshire East was being proposed today, knowing everything we know now, would local people vote for it?

It's a fair question.

And one Reform Macclesfield believes deserves an honest answer.

Remember when Labour took power and proudly claimed they had ended the junior doctors' dispute?

One of their first actions was to agree a generous pay settlement and tell the country the strikes were over. We were assured this would bring stability to the NHS and help tackle waiting lists.

Now resident doctors are heading back out on strike and East Cheshire NHS Trust is warning of severe disruption to services across Macclesfield, Congleton and Knutsford.

So what exactly was fixed?

Taxpayers were told the problem had been solved. Patients were told the NHS would be able to focus on reducing delays. Yet here we are again facing more disruption and more uncertainty.

This is what happens when governments mistake spending money for solving problems. Paying off a dispute may buy some time, but it does not address the underlying issues facing the NHS.

Patients deserve a healthcare system that works, not politicians claiming victory only for the same problems to return repeatedly, months and years later!!

Everything Labour touches, fails. They are incompetent beyond belief.

Please, just vote Reform at every opportunity. This madness has to end 💙

The historic Borough of Macclesfield served more than 150,000 residents across Macclesfield, Wilmslow, Knutsford, Poynton, Bollington and surrounding communities.

In 2009, it was abolished and absorbed into Cheshire East.

Today, decisions affecting our town are made within a council responsible for communities stretching from Crewe and Nantwich in the south to Wilmslow and Knutsford in the north.

But can one authority genuinely understand the priorities of every community it serves?

Macclesfield has its own identity, its own economy and its own challenges. The issues facing our town are not always the same as those facing Crewe, Nantwich or elsewhere in Cheshire East.

The bigger a council becomes, the further decision-making moves away from the people it affects. That inevitably raises questions about accountability, representation and whether local priorities are receiving the attention they deserve.

Reform Macclesfield believes local people should have a stronger voice over local decisions.

After all, if decisions affecting Macclesfield are important to the people of Macclesfield, shouldn't Macclesfield have a greater say in making them?
