Memorial Service for Nirmal Purja MBE “Nimsdai”
On 12 August 2026, Gurkha Major (QGE) Khadka Bahadur Gurung invited the regimental families of The Queen’s Gurkha Engineers, veterans, the QGE Association and the Maidstone Gurkha Nepali Community to Invicta Park Barracks, Maidstone, to honour our brother, QGE Sapper Nirmal Purja MBE — “Nimsdai.”
Nimsdai joined the Brigade of Gurkhas in 2003 and was selected as a Sapper in The Queen’s Gurkha Engineers. His six years of service with the QGE helped shape the values that defined his life: courage, discipline, determination, respect and humility. He led from the front, served his comrades with devotion and carried the Gurkha warrior ethos throughout his military career, later serving with the Special Boat Service.
He took those same qualities to the world’s highest peaks. Through Project Possible and the historic winter ascent of K2, Nimsdai redefined what was thought possible in mountaineering. Humble and steadfast, he continued to support people from all walks of life through the Nimsdai Foundation and inspired millions around the globe.
For the QGE, Nimsdai will always be one of our own — a Gurkha Sapper, fearless warrior, leader and brother whose courage, humility and determination brought pride to the Paltan and inspiration to people everywhere.
Rest in peace, Nimsdai — in the mountains you loved. Gone but not forgotten.
“Giving up is not in the blood, Sir, it’s not in the blood!”
Jai QGE!
