Our focus is always on the child or young person in our care so we can carefully match the individual needs of the young person with our foster carers. We equip our foster carers so that they can feel rea

dy to take on any challenges in fostering. Foster carers have a voice in our agency so that we can adapt to support them and make sure they get the most out of fostering. Supporting our foster carers means we can provide safe, loving, affirming homes for all the children and young people in our care. We aid our young people in managing trauma, building confidence and developing life skills so they can be secure, happy and self-supporting members of society once they leave care.

“Teenagers don’t need perfect foster carers. They need people who won’t give up on them.”

When people think about fostering, they often picture younger children. But teenagers in care are some of the most overlooked young people, despite having so much to offer.

In our latest blog, foster carers share their real experiences of fostering teenagers, including:

✨ The myths that stop people considering fostering teens
✨ The challenges and rewards of building trust
✨ The unexpected moments that make it all worthwhile
✨ Why fostering a teenager can be life changing for both the young person and the carer

One foster carer describes watching a young person go from pushing everyone away to finally feeling safe enough to let someone in. Those moments are what fostering is all about.

If you’ve ever wondered what fostering teenagers is really like, this blog offers an honest and inspiring insight into the difference a stable, caring home can make.

🧠 Fostering Myth:

“You need to have children of your own to foster.”

❌ FALSE:

The truth is you don’t need to be a parent to be a great foster carer. What you do need is time, compassion, resilience, and a genuine commitment to supporting a child or young person.

Many brilliant foster carers come to fostering without having raised children themselves. We provide full training, ongoing support, and guidance, so you’re never doing it alone.

Our clubs with the children 🦋

Our science club is all about the butterflies this month. Tiny caterpillars have arrived and the children have welcomed them into their homes. Giving children that special responsibilities of caring for something, watching it grown. It creates lasting positive experience, reinforcing the message that they are capable and caring.

This activity is designed to support children’s emotional wellbeing, sense of belonging, and connection within their foster family. It isnt about teaching science perfectly, but about creating shared moments and emotional safety.

Small experiences can have a big impact. Sitting together, noticing change, and caring for something living can quietly reinforce a child’s sense of safety and belonging.

In foster care, creating things together is more than an activity, it is a way of building trust.

For children who have experienced disruption or loss, joining in everyday activities can feel risky. Shared moments like baking biscuits, painting, or assembling flat‑pack furniture allow connection to happen naturally, without pressure.

It encourages communication without forcing conversation

Helping children feel conncted and showing children that they have a place in the family.

Small shared moments say that they belong there.

THIS IS FOSTERING

One size doesn’t fit all! Our children are all unique, so our foster carers need to come in all shapes and sizes. We love this about our Homefinding carers.

This is fostering:

“I began fostering when I was in my twenties. I didn’t have children of my own, but I had
lots of experience working with children through my job in a school and a nursery.

At the time, I was living at home with my mum, but we had a spare bedroom. We also knew someone else who was fostering, which helped us understand what it involved.

As a family, we talked it through carefully and decided to give it a go.

We were very clear from the beginning about roles and responsibilities, especially around who was responsible for the child. Having those boundaries helped everything work well.

Ten years later, I have never looked back.
During that time, I’ve cared for children who have gone on to adoption. I’ve helped children find their feet, feel safe, and begin to trust again. I’ve watched them grow in confidence and become part of a much bigger family network.

Fostering showed me that families don’t all look the same. And I have become part of a
bigger community, made friendships and got qualifications transferrable beyond
fostering.”

It’s Foster Care Fortnight! A time to celebrate our carers and their families, the children they look after and to raise awareness of the need for more families to take on this amazing role!

We wanted to take the chance to let our carers know how much we appreciate them.

At Homefinding, this is how we value our carers...
