In Olde English, “Beeleigh” meant a clearing in the woods for bees. That connection, between Beeleigh and bees, goes back to the Dark Ages. Since that time, honey has been harvested and bees have been tended to at the Abbey.

Today, Buckfast bees, a type of bee first bred at Buckfast Abbey in Devon, gather honey in approximately 50 hives on and around the estate’s lands. The honey is cold-extracted and jarred as a raw product at the Abbey. It is produced in much the same way it has been for a millennium.

Our Abbey honey is just some of the produce from the estate available for purchase on our open garden days.

Summer is settling in across the grounds of Beeleigh Abbey 🌿

This Friday, the gardens will open, offering time to wander and take in the estate at your own pace.

Lunch, tea and refreshments will be available throughout the day and served in the courtyard.

There will also be the opportunity to purchase a small selection of produce from the estate, including lamb and honey from hives kept here at Beeleigh.

🍃 Summer at Beeleigh Abbey 🍃

Across the summer months, the gardens open on selected dates, offering the opportunity to explore a historic estate shaped by centuries of care and cultivation.

🌿 Open Garden Days

June: 19th & 26th
July: 10th, 17th & 31st
August: 7th
September: 4th & 11th

Beyond the gardens, visitors can enjoy lunches, teas and refreshments in the courtyard, alongside the opportunity to purchase estate-grown plants, honey from the Abbey’s hives, and grass fed lamb from the surrounding pasture.

For those wishing to delve deeper into Beeleigh’s past, our Historic Guided Walks with local historian Stephen Nunn continue through the grounds on 17th June and 2nd September. Beginning in 1180, these walks uncover the stories, buildings and people that shaped the Abbey through the centuries, concluding with tea and cake.

A chance to wander, discover, and spend time within one of Essex’s hidden historic estates.

A hidden gem shaped by nearly a millennium 🌿

On the edges of Maldon, behind the walls of Beeleigh Abbey, lies a landscape shaped by centuries of care, cultivation and change.

On 19th June, the gardens will open once more, inviting visitors to wander through the grounds, a place where history sits quietly alongside the season’s abundance.

Lunches, teas and refreshments will be served in the courtyard, for those wishing to pause a while longer.

And durning the day visitors will have the opportunity to purchase produce and plants from the estate. You will find plants grown by Head Gardener Kaye and her team, alongside wild honey from the estate’s hives and hand-reared grass fed lamb from the surrounding fields

We always strive to not to disappoint anyone, however the abbey is completely sold out for today’s open gardens. I’m afraid we will not be able to accept any door admissions.
Tickets are on sale for Junes open gardens (link in bio) and we would gently encourage you to book ahead.

Those joining us for Friday’s Open Garden Day will have exclusive access to the Beeleigh Abbey estate plant and produce shop 🌿

A quieter extension of the estate itself, the shop brings together what is grown, raised and carefully produced here at Beeleigh.

Plants cultivated by Head Gardener Kaye and her team — from perennials and border plants to herbs and seasonal bedding — sit alongside produce from the wider estate, including wild honey from the Abbey’s own hives and hand-reared, organic lamb raised on the surrounding pasture.

Everything offered reflects the landscape beyond the garden walls: shaped by the seasons, by careful stewardship, and by the working life of the estate.

Lunches, teas and refreshments will be served in the courtyard throughout the day, offering time to pause within the setting of this historic place.

An invitation not only to wander the gardens, but to take a small part of Beeleigh home with you.

Behind the walls of Beeleigh Abbey, the season continues to unfold 🌿

On 22nd May, the gardens will open for another day of wandering through a landscape shaped over centuries.

The estate plant and produce shop will be open throughout the day, alongside lunches, teas and refreshments served in the courtyard.
