Within the 300-year-old gardens of Birdsall House, designed by Thomas Knowlton, a pupil of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, sweeping banks of rhododendrons are now in full bloom, transforming the estate with vivid pinks, deep reds, rich purples and soft yellows.

We were delighted to welcome award-winning photographer ARPS, a Royal Horticultural Society medal winner for Botanical Photography (2021 & 2023), to capture the gardens at their seasonal peak.

Originally from Asia, rhododendrons thrive in acidic woodland soils, which is why they are so often found in and around wooded landscapes. Rhododendron comes from the Greek words “rhodo” meaning rose and “dendron” meaning tree, translating to “rose tree”, a reference to the large shrubs or small trees on which they grow.

Introduced to the UK in the 18th and 19th centuries, they quickly became a favourite of Victorian estate gardens for their dramatic colour and abundance. And even today, they continue to transform the grounds into sweeping drifts of colour.

Thank you Julie, for capturing the beauty of these striking flowers so wonderfully.

Today we celebrate the 100th birthday of one of Britain’s most treasured voices: broadcaster, naturalist, and storyteller, Sir David Attenborough.

Here at Birdsall House, we hold a deep admiration for those who dedicate their lives to studying, understanding, and celebrating the natural world.

Hanging in our entrance hall is the portrait of Francis Willoughby, the pioneering ornithologist and naturalist whose studies of birds, eggs, and seeds helped shape the early foundations of natural history. The work of Willoughby and his peers would go on to influence generations of scientific discovery, laying important groundwork for thinkers such as Carl Linnaeus and Charles Darwin.

The spirit of curiosity and wonder that inspired those early naturalists continues today through Sir David’s extraordinary storytelling, encouraging us all to look more closely at the remarkable planet we call home.

So today, we raise a glass to Sir David Attenborough and to a lifetime spent inspiring awe, discovery, and a deeper love for the natural world.

If you would like to find out more about the history of the Willoughby family and Birdsall House, history tours are available, via the link in our bio.

The Old Kitchens dance floor made its debut in style…

Two years ago, after a year of careful renovations of the derelict Victorian kitchens, we opened The Old Kitchens and hosted our first ever party.

Paul and Katie chose Birdsall House to hold their wedding reception, filling the space with joy, music, laugher, excitement and surprises! Exactly what a party should be.

As we celebrate The Old Kitchens' two year anniversary we also wish you both a very happy two year wedding anniversary, with many more celebrations (and dancing!) to come.
