TALK:
A conversation with Dr Kate Lister

From the host of award-winning History Hit podcast Betwixt the Sheets is Dr Kate Listers new book ‘Flick’.

There is a common misconception that before modern day feminism, women throughout history simply lay back and thought of England or their respective place of origin; that the modern ‘s*x positive’ movement is a radical break from the past. But women demanding better s*x did not arrive with free love or the Rampant Rabbit. It has been a very long fight indeed.

From Ancient Mesopotamian s*x goddesses to the contraceptive pill, Kate Lister takes us through history to show us how women’s s*xual pleasure was controlled, understood and thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed.

Join us for a conversation with Dr Kate Lister. To book please email : [email protected]

TALK: From Catwalk to Stage

Fashion, always looking for new ways to reinvent itself: hanging onto the coat-tails of ‘high art’, theatre. What better way than through a free fashion show and surrounding publicity in both theatre and fashion media, whether opera, dance or dramatic intervention? The performance gains too, through updating sometimes moribund works, giving them a contemporary edge. And of course fashion shows are performances in their own right, with the audience being an integral part of the show. To see and be seen. Strutting your stuff. Performative indeed.

But of course all is not quite what it seems. Smoke and mirrors. That’s theatre!

Drawing on her work in both theatre and fashion, Anthea will talk about designers working in theatre, and maybe spill a secret or two about such collaborations.

QUEEN CHARLOTTE: Representations, Misrepresentations and Beyond✨

We are excited to announce first in our summer talk series.

From political satire to Bridgerton, Lucy Haigh will be discussing the myths and realities surrounding Queen Charlotte.

During her time as consort her physical appearance, intellect and femininity was questioned as a multitude of political cartoons were published depicting her. How did she choose to portray herself through portraiture and royal commissions in contrast to this negative light and what similarities can be drawn to the way women are depicted in modern press today?

A quick guide to how to find us!

We are a little tucked away as our entrance isn’t on the pavement, so we can be a bit difficult to find. Instead, you need to walk through a passage just past The Stawberry Tree.

We hope to welcome you to the Museum of Fashion Malvern soon!

This week we’re taking a look at this amazing donation we received last week - a late 1850’s bodice. It also came with some deconstructed fabric that would have formed the skirt.

Interestingly, due to collections policies in other museums, this donation had been turned down before it reached us!

Purple was a very popular colour during this time period, with “Mauve Mania” referring to the craze for the first synthetic aniline dye, mauveine, discovered by 18-year-old William Henry Perkinwhile in 1856 whilst trying to cure malaria. This accidental breakthrough revolutionized fashion, making vibrant purple accessible to the masses and sparking a massive expansion in the chemical dye industry.

We currently have a purple late Victorian gown on display in the museum, this will only be available to see for another few weeks until we change our displays!

Stay tuned for another highlight from the collection next week!✨
